Iconic Image Workshop Series – The Cowboy

Working Ranch (Cowboy) Photography Workshop (4 1/2 Days)

Day 1

Arrive at the ranch by early afternoon (no later than 3:00pm at the Durango La Plata County Airport – DRO-airport code)
Evening welcome with activity, campfire, general mixer, stories and history from Scotty Cox – Cowboy and Ranch Owner

Day 2

Official start of the workshop – Cowboys, cowgirls and animals/livestock found on the ranch…this will your day to shoot whatever you wish, to become familiar with the ranch and the people that make it all work. We want you to shoot tons of images but we also want you to have a chance to get to know the subjects.

Purpose/Intent

9:00 – 10:0am
Intro Class – How to Shoot a Photo Essay – for the web, a magazine, or for personal use. Michael will lead an in-depth visual presentation and discussion on the equipment, knowledge and skills required to produce a quality photo essay. Topics covered: how to identify subjects before the shoot begins, the use of light and angles, how to get the most out of your equipment, how to compose for maximum usage possibilities and much more.

10:00 – 12:00pm
Morning Shoot Session – We will set up shoot locations around the corrals so you can shoot the horses being saddled and the cowboys getting ready for the afternoon cattle/horse drives.

12:00 – 1:00pm – Lunch

1:00 – 5:00pm

Afternoon Shoot Session – This is where we set up cattle/horse drives with cowboys and cowgirls moving the livestock from Point A to Point B. There will also be opportunities for freelance shooting around the ranch looking for some of the not so obvious shots.

5:00-6:00pm
Download images for critique session – each workshop participant will edit the day’s images selecting their top ten, which will be included in the 6:00 pm critique session.

6:00 –10:00pm

Day 3

The Fine Art Landscape – How to produce an image that is compelling and visually stunning. How is the image created with available light and what makes strong composition?

5:30– 10:00am
Rise and Shoot
Pastries and coffee
Shoot scenic early morning images of cowboys, cattle, horses in the landscape…big country small subjects.

10:00 – 11:00am
Breakfast and download morning shoot images

11:00 – 1:30pm
Download morning shoot and Critique of images

1:30 – 3:30pm
Master class and presentation – The components of a great landscape image

Lunch 3:30 – 4:30pm

4:30 – 9:00pm
Shooting and processing – Shooting ranch scenes, cowboys, and livestock with the late afternoon light and golden/orange sunset.

9:00 – 10:00pm
Appetizers/wine and cheese mixer

Day 4

Environmental Portraits – Create the ultimate western images…cowboys, horses, cattle, the landscape…you choose the subject and we will work together as a group to produce the ultimate image.

Space is limited to 10 participants and requires a minimum of 8 participants to operate.

Fee: The cost of this 4 1/2-day Photographic Instructional Workshop is $2250. Fee includes lodging*, transportation and meals. This workshop requires a minimum of 8 participants. If you place a deposit or pay for the workshop in full and we don’t secure 8 participants we will refund your money in full. The workshop starts at the Durango La Plata County Airport located approximately 15-20 minutes from downtown Durango, Colorado and upon completion we will provide transportation back to the Durango La Plata County Airport (airport code – DRO). Durango, Colorado is a very interesting and scenic place to visit, should you have an extra couple of days either prior to or after the workshop you may consider adding onto your stay. Keep in mind that any additional reservations and or accommodations/meals in Durango are your responsibility. We suggest you visit the Durango tourism and travel site provided here.
