Guest Intro
Lake Conroe is famous as a big bass lake. Ron Higgins calls it a home water, and has seen fish over 13 pounds come aboard his boat. He also plies the waters of Lake Livingston and Lake Houston, and not just for bass. Stripers, Wipers, Catfish and Crappies are common quarry at Higgy’s Freshwater Adventures, and he’s got some good stories to tell on today’s Schtick.

Brian / Moldy Chum News
How was IFTD?
Top stories on the Chum

Teeg / Recycled Fish News
Our 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon winners from 2010 are back from epic trips:
Marty Hughes and his boys fished Table Rock Lake with Brian Snowden with help from the PAA and BoatUS Angler
Watch the highlight video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmSqEjOmwPw
The Three Muskyteers – Brian Wise, Kyle Kosovich and Aaron Scott are back from Spring Bay Resort
This year’s anglers are vying for trips to Griffin Fishing, Spring Bay Resort and Fish Tales Outfitter thanks to Scheels.
More info on our website: http://www.recycledfish.org/blog/fish-a-thon/epic-trips-await-24-hour-fish-a-thon-anglers/ (http://www.recycledfish.org/blog/fish-a-thon/epic-trips-await-24-hour-fish-a-thon-anglers/)
Team Bear Trail – K8 and Nanci – are our current fundraising leaders: http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/team-bear-trail.htm (http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/team-bear-trail.htm)
Team Friendzy – Mike Sklad and crew – put in their 24 this past weekend
I’m off to Kentucky this week!

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news in Alaska – Trout Unlimited just finished a major salmon restoration project in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. Great! Salmon can use all the good news they can get.

Tragic news from Washington – A fisheries worker died last week during a steelhead survey on the Wind River. Mark Snepp, died while walking the bank and recording fish data from his diving partner.

Weather Alert: Hurricane Irene is storming toward the coast of Florida, and could have major impacts all the way up the eastern seaboard. Batten down the hatches and secure your boats.

More from Washington state, the pink salmon run is awesome, but sockeye returns are dismal. No Lake Wenatchee Sockeye Fishery This Year. Go stick some pinks.

In Kansas – 7 lakes are under a Blue-Green Algae warning, more are under advisory status. Blue-Green algae can be fatal, especially to pets, but tend to produce flu-like symptoms. Blue-Green Algae blooms are happening nationwide, it’s not just Kansas.

The Fly Fishing industry moves its IFTD show from New Orleans to Reno next year. Back to the mountains for the fly guys.

In Pro Bass Fishing, South Carolina pro Todd Auten is the 2011PAA Angler of the Year. We’ll see him at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic with the other 15 top PAA Finishers.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds: Year End Edition
www.GreenTackle.com (http://www.greentackle.com)

Biggest story of the year – Deepwater Horizon. Billions of gallons of oil, a massive threat to the marsh, BP’s PR disaster, another kick in the guts for the Gulf Region, dispersant, fraud in claims, workers hospitalized, oil rig capped, what’s the state of the Gulf today? Nobody knows.

Florida was crushed by frigid temps early in the year, killing millions of shallow water fish, which led to fishing closures…but it’s already bouncing back.

July – Arkansas - High School Bass Fishing got its world championship. The first ever High School Fishing World Finals was fished in Russellville, Ark. on Lake Dardanelle. They’re just doing it for the girls.

Access denied – Utah and California were hot-spots in access battles – Utah saw access reduced statewide on their streams through a new private land ruling this year. On a national front, Obama’s gonna take your fishing rod! No, he wasn’t, but a NOAA spacial planning roundtable had the fishing industry up in arms, and the plan got shut down.

Alaska – banned felt soled wading boots, and invasive species were a hot topic coast to coast, whether it was zebra mussels or didymo or asian carp. Speaking of Asian Carp …

Chicago, Illinois – gateway to the Great Lakes – the only place able to keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes, by closing the Chicago Sanitary Ship Canal. Despite the pleadings of all other Great Lakes States – Illinois wouldn’t cooperate. Short term thinking. Stupid.

In Washington DC - EPA issues centered around two big issues for fishing: ethanol in fuel and lead fishing tackle. They decided not to ban lead. Final decision on ethanol – pending.

In Pro Bass Fishing: T. Boone Pickens bought into FLW, and Wal-Mart signed on again …new life for that organization. ESPN finally got BASS sold to Jerry McKinnis and his group, to the delight of many. Meanwhile, the PAA continued to grow as the angler-owned pro fishing circuit. Finally, Kevin VanDam won the Angler of the Year title AGAIN. Greatest of all time? Yes.

Stewardship Tip of the Year – Make up for the other guy. Whatever you see hurting our waters – don’t be “that guy,” whether it’s litterbug guy or over-harvest guy or oil behind the garage guy. Don’t be “that guy,” but do something to make up for “that guy,” too. That’s how we get somewhere good.

Next stop, the Des Moines Winter Games
I’ve been invited to be a guest at Ice Roads in Okoboji

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good News: Patagonia is out with its latest grant awards in the World Trout program. They’ve given away another $75,000 to help fish and fisheries around the globe. Two thumbs way up.

Bad News: VHS, one of the most deadly viruses for fish, had been identified in all of the Great Lakes except Superior. It was just found in Lake Superior. Clean, inspect and dry, everybody.

Rockport, Washington – 8th Annual Spey Days has been announced for March 26. Amazing lineup of presenters – details at speydaysnw.com.

Off the Southern California cost, epic numbers of Humbolt Squid are bending rods and leaving arms burning, these massive squid are bigger than a Labrador Retriever. They’re invasive, so hook ‘em and invite ‘em home for dinner.

Harrisburg, PA - Fly Fisherman magazine – the biggest Fly Fishing mag in North America - is downsizing its staff. So long to Associate Publisher Linda Wood and Managing Editor Geoff Mueller.

From Washington, DC – the President’s 2011 Federal Budget is out for review, it includes a request of $1.6 billion for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That’s a big number, it includes money for Climate Change Adaptation, safeguards for endangered species during renewable energy development, ecosystem restoration, land acquisition, and a Youth in Natural Resources Initiative.

This week’s Recycled Fish Stewardship Tip: Encourage the publisher of your favorite magazines to print on recycled paper. A single magazine making the switch would mean 50,000 more trees a year in our forests, and 20 million gallons less wastewater.

More fishing hoopla at MoldyChum.com - Stewardship Tips and more at RecycledFish.org.

Brian's Quote of the Week

"With every trip I collect new mementos, though few are collected in scrapbooks. And all who fish for bass across the land collect them too. They are the images from first light to last and from first fish to last. And we'd share them in a minute. Some recall particular triumphs, often preserved in snapshots and clippings, while others we tend to hide, at least until the time we're ready to laugh about them. Daybreaks, canebrakes, heartbreaks, muggy nights, and foggy mornings. A hundred things that worked, and a thousand more that should have. That's bass fishing." —-George Kramer
