Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

In Miami, Florida – the Miami Boat Show is going on now, it’s the annual get-together for the Marine Manufacturer’s Association. More innovation on the market this year – a sign of improving times.

Lay Lake, Alabama – it’s tough out there for the 50 men and 1 female angler practicing for the Bassmaster Classic. Snow, in Alabama!? The Classic gets underway next week.

Vermont - Richard Levesque shattered the previous state record walleye this week with a 14.55 pound walleye. He caught it through the ice on Lake Champlain, it beats the previous record by more than a pound.

From the Ice Belt – the next stops on the Recycled Fish “On Ice” tour are the Big Creek Hardwater Open near Des Moines, Iowa February 20 & 21, Fishapalooza on Forest Lake, Minnesota February 27 and the Ice Roads March 5, 6 and 7 on Okoboji in Iowa.

In Washington, DC – fisheries management at the federal level and people are worked up. Some say radical environmental groups want to close 50% of all waters and wilderness, which would effectively end recreational fishing, and they’re pushing an executive order to get it done without due process and congressional oversight. This is a sticky one, because fishery and environmental management is so important – get more at keepamericafishing.org (http://keepamericafishing.org).

This week’s Recycled Fish Stewardship Tip: Circle hooks mean good things for catch and release. If you’re not using them yet, stock up for the fishing season ahead.

A couple of episodes ago we spoke with Bill Farnum for Casting 4 a Cure, the charity fly fishing events that he’s set up to raise money for Rhett’s Syndrome. One component of spreading the word on the disease and their events is an online video which is being shown at Fly Fishing Film Tour events. It was produced by Bryan Huskey at Fishbite media (http://www.fishbitemedia.com/), and as we mentioned at the top of the show, Bryan is up to a lot lately.

Been fishing lately?

You just won gold at the Oregon Fly Fishing Film Festival (http://oregonflyfishingblog.com/2010/01/14/oregon-fly-fishing-film-festival-finalists-videos/) – tell us how

What got you going in the direction you are, and who has helped you get there?

You’ve been featured in Catch Magazine (http://www.catchmagazine.net/) – tell us about those shots and what went into getting them.</itunes:summary>

Fly Fishing Film Tour (http://www.flyfishingfilmtour.com/) is coming to Omaha!
Our Website works, sorta!
Too little fishing, and more ticks than mushrooms – but a good night of bass fishing

Guest Intro / Interview
Last week we spoke with Ben Hobbins from the Lake Resources Group whose company took medical technologies – the stuff that’s used for skin grafts – and adapted it into plastic worms that just won’t break. They last as long as you want to fish them and they won’t come off the hook, which means fewer fish ingest the worms by accident, less plastic winds up in the environment, and ultimately it leads to healthier fish and fisheries.

This week’s guest showcases another medical marvel making it’s way from pharmaceuticals to fishing for the health of fish and wildlife. We’re pleased to welcome Patrick Ferguson from Bioline to this week’s Fish Schtick…

Patrick, first and foremost, how’s fishing? We heard you were in a bass tournament last week, let’s hear about that.
What stage of the spawn were fish in?
How were you fishing?
What did it take to win the tournament? What was big fish? What was your big fish?

I assume you were fishing with Bioline?
Everybody hears ‘Biodegradable’ and instantly imagines their fishing line dissolving in the water, but that’s not what happens at all – it’s tough stuff – tell us about it, and how it works.

Recycled Fish Ambassador Wayne Papp ( http://recycledfish.org/home/?p=262) is a guide up at Witch Bay resort on Lake of the Woods in Canada. He fished the stuff all winter through the ice, and has some amazing catches to show off with Bioline, including some massive lake trout. What are some of the most amazing fish stories you’ve heard caught on Bioline so far?

Who is using it? Where is it catching on?

Why does it matter? What are some of the issues with fishing line in the environment?

Any statistics on fishing line in the environment you can share?

How does it compare to mono?

How much does it sell for and where can people get it?

Conservation
Brian – you got anything good to get in here?

Met the people from Urban City Anglers in Atlanta this week, they’re solving environmental problems in the inner city by taking kids fishing. This was an interesting story after hearing from my wife who went to Detroit this week to plant trees with inner city kids… I used to be on the board of Big City Mountaineers, similar program using the backcountry. This could go nationwide, I would love to help.
