Hard at work on the Recycled Fish “On Ice” Tour, too.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news – In British Columbia, the Frasier River may see its best Sockeye run in 100 years. Why? One theory is nutrients from volcanic ash following the Kasatochi eruption in 2008.

Four guys from Illinois were fined almost $5,000 for poaching in Canadian waters, and then lying about it. They had their daily limit on them, but too many fish back at the cabin. Don’t get greedy.

Missouri could soon join Vermont, Alaska, Maryland, New York and other states who are considering or have already banned felt soles on wading boots.

In the Gulf – What’s the huge orange mass floating around out there? Not oil. Tests show that it’s a big algae bloom, typical this time of year.

In Texas – 782 anglers showed up at Lake Fork for the 5th annual Berkley Big Bass Challenge. A couple people went home with Skeeter Boats. Dale Drewery from Nagadoches, Texas. His big bass was just over 9 pounds.

Down the road in San Antonio – Reel Recovery helps men in treatment or recovery from cancer through fly fishing. Next event is November 7-9 at Joshua Creek Ranch in Boerne, Texas.

In Pro Bass Fishing – A new structure to get into the Bassmaster Classic, including a slot for college anglers. College sport with a chance to win money? Sounds NC-AA funky to a lot of people.

This week’s Stewardship Tip – Ride your bike! Walk! C’mon Americans, we don’t have to drive everywhere. We save money, lose weight, feel better, and steward our waters better when we walk or ride, rather than drive.

More fishing hoopla at MoldyChum.com (http://moldychum.com) - Stewardship Tips and more at RecycledFish.org (http://recycledfish.org).

www.GreenTackle.com: GreenFish – Green Tackle has the entire GreenFish product line now available for purchase. When people buy the GreenFish apparel they are giving in 3 ways: (1) GreenFish gives to 1% to the planet (2) They can choose one of the GreenFish charities, including Recycled Fish when they check out (3) Green Tackle donates 1% of the sale to RF. Green Tackle is also giving chances to win GreenFish gear in the next couple e-newsletters.

Marshall Cutchin runs MidCurrent, and its success might owe to his rich history. He’s got degrees from Tufts and Harvard. He knows what it is to be a working stiff under fluorescent lights, he’s done that. But his family history in the Keys and a vacation there got him into guiding in the Florida Keys back when there weren’t a lot of guides down there.</itunes:summary>

Last year, our "Ice Fishing 201" video went a step further in the how-to of ice fishing. For year three, we took the camera indoors to the St. Paul Ice Fishing and Winter Sports Expo to show you some of the hottest stuff coming to the hard water this season.

Fran and Fly Cast America are doing more than just a fishing show though, they are organizing trips into destination fisheries in South America, and they are organizing travel discount programs to benefit rural schools in Patagonia. We’ll hear more about that, and some of the sensational fisheries they have at their fingertips, on today’s Fish Schtick.

Around the World of Fishing in 120 Seconds

Guest Intro / Interview

Francisco Mariani joins us today from Buenos Aires, Argentina where he calls home. It’s the base of operations for Fly Cast America (http://www.flycastamerica.com), the fly fishing offering on ESPN Latin America. I came to know Fran when he joined Recycled Fish, and then contacted me to see if we minded having him run our weekly Stewardship Tip on the Fly Cast America website. Of course we didn’t, and he now translates relevant, weekly tips over to Spanish, which makes the information available to a much wider audience. It’s his way of using the resources at his fingertips to spread the Stewardship Ethic, and we’re glad to know him – Fran, welcome to the Fish Schtick.

Tell us about some of the fishing you’ve encountered in filming for your show …

How big is the audience for fly fishing down there, and what else are you on the air with on ESPN?

You’ve fished across both North America and in South America – what are some of the differences you see …

A Portland-based manufacturer, Korkers creates all terrain footwear with interchangeable traction that allows outdoor enthusiasts to adapt to varying conditions in and out of water.

(http://korkers.com/skin/frontend/default/korkers/images/man_climbing_waterfall.jpg)The Korkers brand was born over 50 years ago on the rugged and treacherous riverbanks of the Umpqua River near Grants Pass, Oregon. Made by hand, using scrap rubber, nylon cord, and carbide spikes, Korkers "River Cleats" were created in the basement of Korkers founder, Arthur Smith. (http://korkers.com/skin/frontend/default/korkers/images/products/guide_3qtr_sm.jpg)The functional yet versatile design of the cleat system quickly grew as a favorite among fisherman who often found themselves slipping and/or falling on slippery river rock, and eventually spread to provide traction safety to a number of industrial applications such as roofing and outdoor work on snow/ice.

Over the years Korkers hasn't abandoned its independent thinking. The company continues to be bold and innovative, having the courage to take risks in order to meet the needs of their compatriots (Friends of Korkers -- FOKkers) who are incapable of limiting themselves to a single pursuit. FOKkers identify with the intensity of mountain adventure where extreme conditions can be challenging and unforgiving. Their gear must perform double duty as conditions change rapidly and performance optimization puts every piece of gear to the test. Some people gear up, we prefer "gearing down". That's where Korkers thrives. Our legendary OmniTrax Interchangeable Sole System enables this rare breed the versatility to do more (adventure) with less (gear). Interchangeable felts for fly fishing, interchangeable cleated soles for clip-less pedals, and an interchangeable trail sole add up to the most versatile and efficient all-terrain transition footwear available. For those that crave outdoor adventure, Korkers expands your boundaries.

Every year I look forward to May and early June. A time when the Colorado comes alive again...the brown of winter gives way to the green of spring. From the urban greenbelts near my studio in west metro Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park baby wildlife can be found just about everywhere. One of my favorite places is a fairly large green belt about 4 miles away where I am almost guarenteed to find baby foxes. The area is frequented by joggers, walkers, bikers, and birdwatchers which have made the foxes fairly accustomed to people so getting close enough with my 500mm lens is fairly easy.
Just so you know I never approach the fox dens directly and I always try to maintain a twenty to forty yard buffer so that the foxes still have a comfort zone and act natural. From this distance I'm always treated to some pretty exciting antics as the young foxes run around testing and learning their much needed life skills. Some of my other favorite spring subjects include mule deer and whitetail deer fawns, calf elk, ducklings and goslings and baby avocets to mention a few.
