It’s Friday, March 10, 2011…

The Fish Schtick is presented by SPOT HUG (http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=113). It’s a satellite based device that provides peace of mind for boaters both when they’re on the water, and when they’re not.

It was a year ago today that NFL player Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith took a doomed fishing trip with two other friends in Florida Gulf Coast waters. Three of the four died – but just two days earlier a friend had urged Cooper to buy a life-saving device used to locate boats in distress. The Coast Guard never received a distress signal from Cooper's 21-foot fishing boat, but the SPOT HUG could have saved all of their lives.

Guest Intro

Robert Thompson makes fishing movies, and right now, one of them – Musky Country: Zero 2 Hero – is terrorizing screens across the country on the Fly Fishing Film Tour. Robert comes from Montana by way of Michigan, he’s in Chicago now. He’s handy with a camera and tells a great story about the wack-jobs who chase Musky tales with fly rods … we’ll get some good stories out of him on today’s Fish Schtick.

Brian / Moldy Chum News
Missoula sent a Fly Fishing Film Tour attendance record, 950 packed the sold out Wilma theater. (http://www.moldychum.com/home-old/2011/3/2/f3t-missoula-crowd-reaction.html)
“Rock bottom? That’s a fishing term. (http://www.moldychum.com/home-old/2011/3/10/rock-bottom-thats-a-fishing-term.html)

Board Retreat: refined our focus
Rolling out a new program: the goal – equip every angler in America to be a custodian of their water
This month we’ll give away a fly rod from Amanda Switzer at RISE, so take the Stewardship Pledge!

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Brought to you by GreenTackle.com (http://www.greentackle.com), where Berkley Gulp! 2” and 3” Minnow Grubs are currently on sale – normally $5.49 a pack, right now you can score them for $3.55 - $4.99. They’ve got some really good deals on the Trigger X products too – about half off on many of those. Pretty steep savings.

Good News: The FishAmerica Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in grants to 18 projects in coastal communities across the United States. We’ll see restored habitat in salt marshes and oyster reefs. They’re helping improve access for upstream spawning for fish like American shad and striped bass, salmon and trout. Other projects help snook, drum and flounder.

Sunland, California: Mike Livingston was awarded the All-Tackle World Record for yellowfin tuna this week at the Fred Hall Tackle Show. Mike’s 405 pound tuna broke the old record by over 15 pounds. That’s a lot of tuna, Charlie.

Washington, DC – the Senate’s not so sure about the science behind recent closures of recreational marine fisheries. As always, the fight is jobs now versus strong fisheries for generations. Hard to tell who the good guys are in this one.

Down in Georgia – the Striper Blitz is on, these cool spring days make for some awesome striper fishing in the big reservoirs around the Southeast.

Utah – If you want to join the group that makes the final decision about hunting and fishing in Utah get your application in right now for the Utah Wildlife Board.

In Pro Bass Fishing – Another VanDam joins the Elite Tour,</itunes:summary>

It’s that year-end time when everybody looks back at the peaks and valleys of the year, the hits and misses, the highs and the lows. This show is dedicated to that – some of our favorite Fish Schtick guests and moments from the year gone by.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds: Year End Edition
www.GreenTackle.com (http://www.greentackle.com)

Biggest story of the year – Deepwater Horizon. Billions of gallons of oil, a massive threat to the marsh, BP’s PR disaster, another kick in the guts for the Gulf Region, dispersant, fraud in claims, workers hospitalized, oil rig capped, what’s the state of the Gulf today? Nobody knows.

Florida was crushed by frigid temps early in the year, killing millions of shallow water fish, which led to fishing closures…but it’s already bouncing back.

July – Arkansas - High School Bass Fishing got its world championship. The first ever High School Fishing World Finals was fished in Russellville, Ark. on Lake Dardanelle. They’re just doing it for the girls.

Access denied – Utah and California were hot-spots in access battles – Utah saw access reduced statewide on their streams through a new private land ruling this year. On a national front, Obama’s gonna take your fishing rod! No, he wasn’t, but a NOAA spacial planning roundtable had the fishing industry up in arms, and the plan got shut down.

Alaska – banned felt soled wading boots, and invasive species were a hot topic coast to coast, whether it was zebra mussels or didymo or asian carp. Speaking of Asian Carp …

Chicago, Illinois – gateway to the Great Lakes – the only place able to keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes, by closing the Chicago Sanitary Ship Canal. Despite the pleadings of all other Great Lakes States – Illinois wouldn’t cooperate. Short term thinking. Stupid.

In Washington DC - EPA issues centered around two big issues for fishing: ethanol in fuel and lead fishing tackle. They decided not to ban lead. Final decision on ethanol – pending.

In Pro Bass Fishing: T. Boone Pickens bought into FLW, and Wal-Mart signed on again …new life for that organization. ESPN finally got BASS sold to Jerry McKinnis and his group, to the delight of many. Meanwhile, the PAA continued to grow as the angler-owned pro fishing circuit. Finally, Kevin VanDam won the Angler of the Year title AGAIN. Greatest of all time? Yes.

Stewardship Tip of the Year – Make up for the other guy. Whatever you see hurting our waters – don’t be “that guy,” whether it’s litterbug guy or over-harvest guy or oil behind the garage guy. Don’t be “that guy,” but do something to make up for “that guy,” too. That’s how we get somewhere good.

Guest Intro

Our guest today is Eric Rathbun founder of Reel Pure (http://reelpure.com/) and partner in crime on Moldy Chum (http://www.moldychum.com/). Frustrated with the old school fly fishing attitude Eric launched Reel Pure (http://reelpure.com/) for regular anglers with an irregular love for fly fishing. Eric's experiences as a rookie fly fisherman convinced him that there was a need for a grassroots lifestyle fly fishing brand that spoke to those of us who were turned off by traditional fly fishing marketing. The concept was not only ahead of it's time but developed a loyal following and brand presence that far exceeded its small collection of products. In 2007 a Reel Pure and Moldy Chum Vulcan mind meld was initiated resulting in a great partnership and an even better friendship. When steelhead aren't kicking his derriere, he hangs in Redmond, WA with his wife and two pooches…Eric, welcome to the Fish Schtick!

Support HR 2565: The National Fish Habitat Conservation Act (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-2565)
the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act (NFHCA) will establish a comprehensive national framework for conserving, restoring and enhancing fish habitats throughout the United States. Modeled on the successful Migratory Bird Joint Ventures and North American Wetlands Conservation Act, the Act will provide for essential funding for fish habitat protection, restoration and enhancement through regional partnerships that engage local partners in conservation action and provide a solid science-based and strategic approach to on-the-ground conservation efforts.

Guest Intro / Interview

This is the first time for me to talk about this on a public scale, but here goes. Jeff and I share a vision. Over the past years, without either of us knowing it, he and I were working on the same project – to fish 50 States in 50 Days. Michael Mauro has a major hand in this vision. His production company, Mauro Media, shot a pilot for what will be come the Recycled Fish 50 States in 50 Days project last fall. Our goal: To fish 50 States in 50 Days, catch a fish in every state, and use that excitement to teach people the ways in which our lifestyle runs downstream. Together with professional bass angler Marcia Rubin, our friend Randy Heavin from Patriot Records, videographer Dirk Ruge and editor Travis Ford from the Mauro Team, have been assembling something that could change the way we all look at water, and our lifestyle. Our plan has been to hit the road of Spring 2010, so when we learned about Jeff and Taylor’s adventure going out this summer, we knew we had to somehow join forces. It’s an honor to welcome our new friend, Jeff Turner, to today’s Fish Schtick.

- On your website – Fish5050.com (www.fish5050.com) – you quote John Eldredge’s book “Wild at Heart.” You say, “Every page seemed to cry out to what I was longing for in life - ADVENTURE! As Eldredge so eloquently writes: "Deep in his heart, every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue." Paint a picture for us about what is going to happen on this big adventure

- What has it taken to get all of this together, in terms of planning?
- Why are you doing it? Tell us about your inspiration.
- There’s a story about you and your dad, the photo on the website. Can you share your Fish of a Lifetime Story?
- How will you be fishing?
- What waters are you really looking forward to?
- Will you be targeting species you’ve never caught?
- How in the world are you paying for all of this?
- You say on the website you’re just a ‘regular guy,’ what does that mean?
- What are the outcomes you want to see from this?

Conservation

We always make it a point to cover some of the key conservation issues, so in keeping with your travels,</itunes:summary>

Conservation:
American Rivers announces its 10 most endangered rivers for 2009

Carp barrier now in operation for the great lakes: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it will activate on April 8th a new electric barrier, known as Barrier IIA, in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lockport, Ill.

The Army Corps has been operating a similar demonstration barrier in the Sanitary and Ship Canal since 2002. Both Barrier IIA and the demonstration barrier will operate at the same time to provide redundant back up. Both will operate at a field strength of one-volt per inch. The purpose of the barriers is to block the passage of aquatic nuisance species between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins. Currently, the greatest concern is preventing Asian carp from moving into the Great Lakes.

Chicago District Commander, Col. Vincent V. Quarles, hailed the activation of Barrier IIA as a significant step forward in halting the spread of invasive species via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. He cautioned, however, that much more work remains to be done.

“The barriers are not a panacea,” Quarles said. “They serve to plug the biggest hole, but much more work needs to be done and we all need to start looking at options for blocking other pathways.”

Montana stream access bill passed - heading to the Governor's desk for signature.

Final Word:
April is national poetry month
We ask a simple question
And that is all we wish:
 Are fishermen all liars?
 Or do only liars fish?
