Tony Forte is the Executive Director at the U.S. Freshwater Fishing Federation. That’s the organizing body that allows the United States to compete in international fishing competitions. One day, fishing might even be an Olympic Sport. That would be the ultimate goal for Tony, who has had the honor of representing America through fishing. It’s a totally different take on fishing and international competition than you’ve ever heard, on today’s Schtick.

It’s the time of the year for Top 10 lists, looks back, and those annual clips shows. We’re no different, we like to look back on all the awesome people we’ve talked to and recount some of our favorite moments on The Schtick.

On a sweltering summer day in 2010, Christine Warren stepped into a 24-foot canoe and paddled toward a goal that she never previously imagined possible. The Texas Water Safari is a 260-mile paddle race from the Texas Hill Country to the Gulf Coast. Run continuously since 1963, the course follows the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers to the coastal fishing town of Seadrift. Paddlers must complete the race in 100 hours. While the exhausting pace and blistering heat are reason enough to bow out, it’s the ancillary hurdles that often eliminate racers long before the finish line: dam portages, water moccasins, logjams, mosquitoes, dysentery, alligators, sleep deprivation, and equipment failures. Paddlefish is the first complete narrative ever published on The Texas Water Safari.

It’s been a while since we did a regular episode – the last couple have been video specials, so we wanted to show the love for our audio podcast amigos. Plus, all three of us have been on the road and had some crazy adventures. Unfortunately, Brian’s sick today and that’s too bad because he had some epic stuff go down in BC and before that, he was over on Cape Cod. You’ll have to settle for Mike and I but we promise not to disappoint.

Nanci Morris Lyon & Kate Taylor fished Alaska’s Naknek River, a tributary to Bristol Bay in this year’s 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon. They were our fundraising leaders by such a wide margin that they out-raised last year’s entire 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon. It’s a testimony to who they are, what their fishery is about, and how much passion people have for defeating Pebble Mine. They join us today from Alaska Sportsman’s Bear Trail Lodge .

Jeff Kolodzinski holds one of the more interesting world records in fishing. Biggest bass? Longest Lingcod? Fattest Flathead? Nope. He holds the record for the most total fish caught in a 24 Hour Period. This is not part of the Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon, there’s another organization – Fishing For Life – that also does its own Fish-A-Thon and Kolo is their spokesperson. Jeff just broke his own world record – you aren’t going to believe how many fish he caught, it’s amazing. But you’ll also love why he does it.

Teeg has been at ICAST, Brian has been at OR, and Mike’s always up to something fun. How about a rundown of what’s new in the fishing and outdoor industry?

Starting on Earth Day, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service launched a series of 50 stories for 50 consecutive weekdays exploring the many ways that climate change is impacting fish and wildlife across America. No geographic region is immune. Combined with other stressors such as urbanization, invasive species and water scarcity, climate change is disrupting natural systems upon which wildlife … and people … depend. The series covered 50 states, looking at regional challenges posed by climate change. Today David Eisenhauer joins us from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service with stories from our wild and natural places, and how they’re changing.

On today’s show, a man who trots around the globe with a fly rod in one hand and a video camera in the other. His latest film, Soulfish 2, goes far beyond the traditional fly fishing destinations like Alaska or Patagonia. Today Mikey Weir takes us to Egypt … yes Egypt … the place with the desert and the camels and the pyramids … plus Mongolia, Mexico, Belize, Hawaii, Louisiana and British Columbia. If you have a computer hooked up to the internet, you’ve seen Robert Lawler’s photo sometime in the past month. He caught a massive sunfish – a redear that weighs over five pounds – and people who don’t even get that excited about fishing have been forwarding that photo all over. It’s made the rounds on every fishing forum, sites like Go Fish’n and of course lots and lots of love on Facebook. The best thing about it is that the guy who caught it is just a guy like you or me, just somebody who likes to fish. His name is Bob Lawler and he’s from Lake Havasu City, Arizona – we tracked him down and got him to join us for today’s Fish Schtick!
