Guest Intro

You saw him in one of our Fish Schtick Video Shorts last year at the FFR Show. Dr. Aaron Adams is the Director of Operations and Research for the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust.  He works to preserve inshore game fish like Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook and Permit from the mangroves to the marl flats. Aaron is a scientist, author, and avid fly angler who is helping recreational anglers make the connection between scientific research and what’s happening on the water. Working out of the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, Dr. Adams is publicizing issues – and the solutions – through projects like Pirates of the Flats airing now on ESPN 2.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good News: Target Corp is no longer selling fresh, frozen or smoked farm-raised salmon in its stores nationwide. Farmed salmon is an ecological disaster – Target is the #2 general merchandise retailer in the United States – this is good news.

Bad News from Illinois, and our Nation’s Capital: Asian Carp win in a battle of smart decision making. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to shut two navigation locks in a drastic attempt to protect the Great Lakes and their $7 billion annual fishery. Worse, new water samples reveal that Asian carp DNA has been found in Lake Michigan near the city of Chicago.

A glimmer of hope out of Wisconsin: The White House has agreed to Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle’s request to hold an emergency Asian carp summit with Great Lakes governors while a Michigan congressman has vowed to lead the fight to block carp from invading Lake Michigan.

From Brainerd, MN – Way to Go! Curtis Yess of Waseca, MN won the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza with a 6.26 pound walleye. He took home a brand new GMC Pick-up Truck. Over 11,000 anglers were on Gull Lake’s Hole in the Day Bay.

In Las Vegas, the SHOT Show is over and the Sportsman Channel Choice Award Winners have been announced. Way to go In Fisherman TV, Doug Stange and the In-Fish team won best fishing show, edging out previous Fish Schtick guest Mike McNett and the Ice Men show. Also announced: The “Golden Moose” awards, Bill Dance Saltwater won best fishing show.

This week’s Recycled Fish Stewardship Tip: Read magazines online. Choosing to read a magazine online will reduce the need to harvest trees for paper. A single magazine means over 400,000 pounds of paper per issue.

- Let’s hear some fishing stories – what’s been happening on the flats?

- One of the most exciting things you guys have going is the Pirates of the Flats series – tell us about that.
