Richard Louv’s biography ends like this: he would rather fish than write. But between “Richard Louv is…” and “…rather fish than write,” is the story of a man who has written eight books and coined the term “Nature Deficit Disorder.” The book that kicked off an international conversation about the relationship with children and nature is entitled Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder. His latest book, The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder offers a new vision of the future, in which our lives are as immersed in nature as they are in technology.

Fishhound Fishing Report

Froggy Waters Outdoors reports 5 Star Fishing in their November 28 report for the Eno River in North Carolina. Fishing is HOT right now for bass, crappie, white bass and catfish. Nearly every stretch of the river has active fish, particularly the area below the Red Mill Rd launch.

Captain Lain Goodwin says c’mon down to Key Largo, Florida. Redfish and trout are on the flats and the water is clear. Redfish from 20-26 inches are tailing all over, and they’re catching some big trout up to 28 inches. The bite should stay good until water temperatures start dropping below 70.

On the Missouri River in Montana, Headhunters Guide Service says that the color pink has started to creep into their daily regimen. It is not required as of yet, but the writing is on the wall. The water temps are still falling about 1 degree every 4 days at a Saturday water temperature of 41F. We can still expect fish to travel to the fly for another couple degrees. We think and hope.

Guest Intro
Lake Conroe is famous as a big bass lake. Ron Higgins calls it a home water, and has seen fish over 13 pounds come aboard his boat. He also plies the waters of Lake Livingston and Lake Houston, and not just for bass. Stripers, Wipers, Catfish and Crappies are common quarry at Higgy’s Freshwater Adventures, and he’s got some good stories to tell on today’s Schtick.

Brian / Moldy Chum News
How was IFTD?
Top stories on the Chum

Teeg / Recycled Fish News
Our 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon winners from 2010 are back from epic trips:
Marty Hughes and his boys fished Table Rock Lake with Brian Snowden with help from the PAA and BoatUS Angler
Watch the highlight video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmSqEjOmwPw
The Three Muskyteers – Brian Wise, Kyle Kosovich and Aaron Scott are back from Spring Bay Resort
This year’s anglers are vying for trips to Griffin Fishing, Spring Bay Resort and Fish Tales Outfitter thanks to Scheels.
More info on our website: http://www.recycledfish.org/blog/fish-a-thon/epic-trips-await-24-hour-fish-a-thon-anglers/ (http://www.recycledfish.org/blog/fish-a-thon/epic-trips-await-24-hour-fish-a-thon-anglers/)
Team Bear Trail – K8 and Nanci – are our current fundraising leaders: http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/team-bear-trail.htm (http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/team-bear-trail.htm)
Team Friendzy – Mike Sklad and crew – put in their 24 this past weekend
I’m off to Kentucky this week!

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news in Alaska – Trout Unlimited just finished a major salmon restoration project in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. Great! Salmon can use all the good news they can get.

Tragic news from Washington – A fisheries worker died last week during a steelhead survey on the Wind River. Mark Snepp, died while walking the bank and recording fish data from his diving partner.

Weather Alert: Hurricane Irene is storming toward the coast of Florida, and could have major impacts all the way up the eastern seaboard. Batten down the hatches and secure your boats.

More from Washington state, the pink salmon run is awesome, but sockeye returns are dismal. No Lake Wenatchee Sockeye Fishery This Year. Go stick some pinks.

In Kansas – 7 lakes are under a Blue-Green Algae warning, more are under advisory status. Blue-Green algae can be fatal, especially to pets, but tend to produce flu-like symptoms. Blue-Green Algae blooms are happening nationwide, it’s not just Kansas.

The Fly Fishing industry moves its IFTD show from New Orleans to Reno next year. Back to the mountains for the fly guys.

In Pro Bass Fishing, South Carolina pro Todd Auten is the 2011PAA Angler of the Year. We’ll see him at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic with the other 15 top PAA Finishers.

It’s Wednesday, May 25, 2011

The Fish Schtick is presented by SPOT HUG. It’s a satellite based device that provides peace of mind for boaters both when they’re on the water, and when they’re not.
The devastation across the country this year has been just horrible. Sensational flooding and tornadoes especially. SPOT HUG can’t prevent stuff like that, but it can make it less awful, and help recover what’s been lost, not to mention preventing mini-disasters that happen every day.

Guest Intro

After a couple of weeks off, we needed to catch up. With Memorial Day Weekend ahead, we wanted to reflect on some of our favorite fishing trips and outdoor adventures in the past couple of years, too.

24 Hour Fish-A-Thon is ramping up! (http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/index.htm)
New partnership with Fishhound
Got to take a bunch of kids from Brownell-Talbot fishing on Monday
Fished in a private charity tournament with friends from Recycled Fish & Bass Pro Shops
Headed to Alabama for a special event for DICK’S Sporting Goods

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news in Louisiana. The CCA and others are building a 4 acre, half million dollar reef near Grand Isle, restoring habitat lost to erosion. Construction is getting underway right now.

Bad news in Maryland. Maryland DNR found whirling disease in 8,000 rainbow trout stocked in several Western Maryland streams. Sucky.

In New York they’re getting ready for the 30th annual LCI Father's Day Derby on beautiful Lake Champlain, the nation's 6th largest freshwater lake. More than $750,000 is up for grabs in cash and prizes.

Massachusetts! As part of a Year of the Turtle conservation campaign, Mary Griffin, Commissioner of the Department of Fish and Game, will help release over 100 endangered Northern Red-bellied Cooters this Friday, May 27 at the Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area in Hanson. Turtle Turtle.

Oklahoma – in time for Memorial Day Weekend – don’t boat drunk. Governor Mary Fallin just signed Senate Bill 324, which went into effect immediately - lowering the legal blood alcohol content in Oklahoma from .10 to .08.

Colorado – Aurora reservoir put out yet another record fish – this time a SUCKER, earlier this month. If you’re in Colorado and not fishing Aurora reservoir … why not? That place puts out a new state record of one species or another every few months. Amazing lake.

In Pro Bass Fishing Dave Mansue of Texas has been elected President of the Professional Anglers Association by the PAA Board of Directors.

This week’s Stewardship Tip: Don’t dump your bait. Colorado DNR checked bait shops to see what was in their tanks. Out of 60 shops, only TWO had a single species of fish in their tanks. That means over 95% had “other fish” mixed in with their bait, and it’s those “other fish” we don’t want introduced into our waters.

Mem Day Weekend – all the crazies will be out. Be safe. Be smart. Be safe.

<itunes:summary>Skeet Reese is not only one of the hottest names in professional bass fishing, he's got an amazing story. Once a professional dancer, he now has a family who often travels with him to events like the Bassmaster Classic. His incredible rig turns more heads than any other on the Bassmaster Elite Tour, his bright yellow signature products have become breakthrough in the tackle industry, and he's a contender in every tournament he fishes. A former Angler of the Year and Bassmaster Classic Champion, he's pretty handy with a rod & reel, so DICK'S Sporting Goods added him to their Pro Staff for 2011.

(http://mauromedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/spot_hug-595x484.jpg)Also brought to you by GreenTackle.com (http://www.greentackle.com/), where Berkley Gulp! 2” and 3” Minnow Grubs are currently on sale – normally $5.49 a pack, right now you can score them for $3.55 - $4.99. They’ve got some really good deals on the Trigger X products too – about half off on many of those. Pretty steep savings.

<itunes:summary>Larry Nixon has fished in more than two dozen Bassmaster Classics, including winning it in 1983. He's a millionaire in the sport of fishing through both the BASS and FLW tours, and he's still actively fishing. A legend that's still on the water competing at the top level - sounds like someone worth spending some time with. Here's his take on what it means to be in the BASSMASTER Classic and what goes through the minds of the anglers out there on the water.

Brought to you by www.GreenTackle.com - Environmentally Friendly Fishing Tackle (http://www.greentackle.com).

Good news – in Indiana, they put up a giant fence to help keep Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes. Now if we could just get Illinois to follow suit.

Bad news – in Maryland, juvenile striped bass counts are down for the third year in a row. Could it be the chicken farms?

In Professional Fishing News – Mercury Marine signed on with FLW again. Seems like a flurry of activity over at FLW since T. Boone Pickens signed on.

Across the Country – Anglers and organizations are being called out as this year’s inductees to the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. On the list, our friend Dave Genz, Kevin VanDam, the National Fish Habitat Action Plan and Angler’s Legacy.

On the Gulf Coast – the Red Snapper bite is on, the season is open now on the weekends.

In Kentucky – Lake Cumberland is in better shape than you’d imagine. Low water led to big fish kills earlier this year. People were worried. But a closer look this fall shows populations are as good as they’ve ever been, according to Kentucky Fish & Wildlife.

In Arkansas – Ranger Boats is expanding, that means 115 jobs and more boats. Things might just be turning around.

This week’s Stewardship Tip – Warm up slow. As the temperatures drop, we’re tempted to let our cars idle to warm up. The most toxic stuff comes out of your tailpipe when your rig is cold, so the less time you spend idling it before you drive it, the better.

Around the World of Fishing – August 27, 2010

Good News: US Fish & Wildlife is giving $600,000 to fight Quagga and Zebra Mussels in Western U.S. Waters.

In other Good News: Louisiana has re-opened all waters to fishing following the BP Oil Spill.

Across the Country: National Hunting and Fishing day is coming up September 25th. The goal? To equip every hunter, angler and sport shooter to more effectively communicate the conservation benefits of traditional outdoor sports.

Did you know? License sales and special taxes on fishing and hunting gear generate $100,000 … every 30 minutes. That’s over $1.75 billion a year-for fish, wildlife and habitat?

It’s true.

On the Gulf Coast the Redfish and Kayak fishing tours are relocating their events within Louisiana due to “logistical issues” presented by the oil spill.

In Minnesota – It’s state fair time and August 28 is Sportsman Day. Wish every State Fair had a day like that.

This week’s Stewardship Tip – Aerate Your Lawn. Believe it or not, this helps your grass grow without needing fertilizer, and it also helps reduce runoff. That’s good for our waters.

Guest Intro / Interview

The first time I went really fast in a bass boat was with Darren Gallaher. I had been in plenty of bass boats, and I had been in plenty of fat boats, but I had never been in a bass boat going really fast, and it was an experience I will not forget. It was terrifying. My butt puckered so tight that it nearly swallowed my cheeks.

What’s fishing been like this year?

Where do you do most of your fishing?

You told me a story about fishing some of these local tournaments once – how’d that go?

Who have you gone fishing with that we know?

I know that you like Deadliest Catch better than Orange County Choppers…

You’re actually going to be on MTV’s “Teen Mom” or “16 and Pregnant,” aren’t you?

You’ve been at the fishing game a long time, tell us about that.

Ever had an animal try to get in the boat with you?

Ever fallen out of the boat?

You do some work with a bunch of brands and products, I know you do some stuff with our friends at Pure Fishing. Anything new or cool happening over there?

Where’s your next fishing tournament?

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good News: A new paddle-powered fishing tournament series emerges in New York State, first event is Saturday, April 24. The catch-photo-release format is easy on fish, the no-impact nature of kayaks and canoes is easy on fisheries, and a percentage of proceeds benefits your favorite stewardship group: Recycled Fish!

Across the Country – Boy Scouts are fishing Berkley – and that’s it. Pure Fishing is providing exclusive support for the 2010 Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree.

North Carolina - There’s a new State Record White Crappie caught in the Tar River Reservoir. Ray Patterson caught the latest record-breaker, smashing the previous record by one ounce of crappie. His fish weighed 3 pounds, 12 ounces. The previous record – 3 pounds, 11 ounces – stood for only one month. Oh – and no fancy gear for this record – it was caught on a cane pole and a minnow.

Maryland – New law. Kids under 13 now have to be wearing a PFD when they’re on a boat, if it’s in motion.

Earth Day – The National Fish Habitat Plan “10 Waters to Watch” for 2010 will be announced, and this year’s Habitat Plan Award Winners will be honored. They include Scott Robinson, who collects this year’s Jim Range Conservation Vision Award for his work in the Southeast.

Also on Earth Day – DisneyNature’s “Oceans” comes to the big screen, check it out at a Rave Motion Pictures near you.

In Print – A Fish Green article in the latest Bass Times and Iowa Sportsman is out with it’s first “Green Issue” in honor of Earth Day.

This week’s Recycled Fish Stewardship Tip: Menhaden Matter. They’re being over-exploited in many areas because they’re rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. They’re an important link in the food chain, so from the paint you buy to the supplements you take, your choices could be leading to their decimation. Learn more at MenhadenMatter.org (http://MenhadenMatter.org).

Guest Intro / Interview

Bluegills are often looked upon around the country as the fish that got us started, but for many, they’re considered a kid’s fish, not challenging enough. We move on to the predators – bass, muskies, walleye, trout – or the trophies – wild steelhead, monster lake trout. However, there is a contingent among anglers who pursue panfish primarily, and their quest is as challenging as any trophy: the two pound bluegill. Bruce Condello has caught his share, he’s our guest on today’s Fish Schtick – from his vacation spot in Las Vegas, Nevada!

John Crews is just over 30 years old and has already fished in the Bassmaster Classic four times. He’s had 15 top-10 finishes in BASS and FLW events, and his career winnings total better than half a million dollars. When he’s not on the water, he calls Salem, VA home where he lives with his wife and two kids.

> Where have you been fishing lately, what was your best outing this year?

> It takes a lot more than being a good stick to become an Elite angler – how did you get there, and get there so young?
> Your degree is in business and economics – does that factor into your job?

> What are the main misunderstandings that people have about what it is to be an Elite angler?
> What are the main differences between the way pros fish and how average Joes fish?

> Last time we saw each other was the Toyota Texas Bass Classic – what’s your take on that event?
> How much of your job is fishing, and how much is doing “other stuff,” and what’s that other stuff?

> Professional Bass Fishing is unlike any other professional sport in so many ways. Talk about some of those.
> When you’re on the water, you’re battling the elements – ever had any sketchy times?
> Your office is a boat and your co-workers are not just other anglers, they’re all sorts of critters. Had any animal encounters out there?

> You have roomed with Mike Iaconelli and Ish Monroe – how does that work?
> Any good stories for us on living with those guys?

> You’ve got a ton of stuff on YouTube. One of my favorites is “top 10 BS lines fishermen use.” Give us one of those.

> What is hot, new and fresh that people are going to want to know about?
> What are you looking forward to for the 2010 season?

> Bassmaster Classic field was announced today – any comments on that?

Guest Intro / Interview

In the world of bass fishing, it would be hard to find many authors who have done more to spread the word on conservation and stewardship issues than Robert Montgomery. He goes far beyond catch and release and exposes pollution issues, the front lines of invasive species, and a host of other issues. His current book, Better Bass Fishing (http://www.countrymanpress.com/titles/BetterBassi1.html) provides a more holistic look at the "big picture" of bass fishing. In addition to how-to information, it reveals secrets for becoming a better bass angler through scientific knowledge on bass biology and the effects of weather. Better Bass Fishing encourages a thoughtful approach to fishing and the realization that success is tied to more than just using the right bait. Robert, welcome to The Fish Schtick.
