SHOW NOTES
Patrick Ferguson is our guest on this week’s Fish Schtick, he joins us from his ‘save the world’ laboratories in Portland, Oregon. Patrick and his crew at Bioline are responsible for the first Biodegradable Fishing Line to be widely available in America. Combining Performance and Conservation, Bioline uses technologies from the medical industry for advancements in fishing. Plus, just last week he was in a bass fishing tournament so we’ll hear how he did, coming up on The Fish Schtick.

Guest Intro / Interview
Last week we spoke with Ben Hobbins from the Lake Resources Group whose company took medical technologies – the stuff that’s used for skin grafts – and adapted it into plastic worms that just won’t break. They last as long as you want to fish them and they won’t come off the hook, which means fewer fish ingest the worms by accident, less plastic winds up in the environment, and ultimately it leads to healthier fish and fisheries.
This week’s guest showcases another medical marvel making it’s way from pharmaceuticals to fishing for the health of fish and wildlife. We’re pleased to welcome Patrick Ferguson from Bioline to this week’s Fish Schtick…
Patrick, first and foremost, how’s fishing? We heard you were in a bass tournament last week, let’s hear about that.
What stage of the spawn were fish in?
How were you fishing?
What did it take to win the tournament? What was big fish? What was your big fish?
I assume you were fishing with Bioline?
Everybody hears ‘Biodegradable’ and instantly imagines their fishing line dissolving in the water, but that’s not what happens at all – it’s tough stuff – tell us about it, and how it works.
Recycled Fish Ambassador Wayne Papp is a guide up at Witch Bay resort on Lake of the Woods in Canada. He fished the stuff all winter through the ice, and has some amazing catches to show off with Bioline, including some massive lake trout. What are some of the most amazing fish stories you’ve heard caught on Bioline so far?
Who is using it? Where is it catching on?
Why does it matter? What are some of the issues with fishing line in the environment?
Any statistics on fishing line in the environment you can share?
How does it compare to mono?
How much does it sell for and where can people get it?
Conservation
Brian – you got anything good to get in here?
Met the people from Urban City Anglers in Atlanta this week, they’re solving environmental problems in the inner city by taking kids fishing. This was an interesting story after hearing from my wife who went to Detroit this week to plant trees with inner city kids… I used to be on the board of Big City Mountaineers, similar program using the backcountry. This could go nationwide, I would love to help.

RBFF made the formal announcement this week on recipients of their Education Grants, and our friend Angie from Fish Her’s ‘Go Fish Girls’ program was among the recipients – we talked about it here first on the Fish Schtick. (Braggity brag brag)
Salmon River story?
And the Partners in Conservation award goes to…Interior Secretary Ken Salazar recognized the scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey office in Fort Collins with the “partners in conservation award” for creating an “invasive species war room.” The USGS provides science and basic research to the government. In the case of the “war room,” launched in March 2008, USGS scientists work with land managers around the country to map the spread of invasive species and predict what new areas they might flourish in.
Meanwhile, boaters and waders are on the front lines of the problem, and the solution. Bob Wiltshire, a former Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist, has taken up the call of this latest challenge to our waterways by founding the Center for Aquatic Nuisance Species (406-220-2059; newsletter@stopans.org) in Livingston, Mont. Bob has created a Clean Angling Pledge (www.stopans.org/pledge/promote.php) a simple action program of “Inspect-Clean-Dry” after gear use.
