Shane Davies has been guiding on the Brazos River in Texas since 1994. Today, he guides exclusively from kayaks, with a strong emphasis on catch and release fishing for trophy fish. He’s an innovative angler, and he is exactly the kind of personality we seek out for The Fish Schtick – one of those ‘off the beaten path’ stories, which in the last week or two broke all across the internet.
If you fish, chances are someone has sent you three e-mails. One was a giant sturgeon that took like four guys to hold it up. In the version you got, the name of the lake where it was caught was changed to a lake close to you or the person sending the photo to you. (It was actually caught in British Columbia.) The second e-mail you got was a photo of a gigantic pike that was eating a big pike, and then the second photo in that e-mail is the guy holding the giant pike. And the third – which you’ve just gotten from someone in the last week or two (and if you haven’t you soon will) was one of Shane Davies holding a giant largemouth bass, with a rattlesnake hanging out of its mouth.
We’ll get the full story from Shane himself on today’s Fish Schtick.

Shane Davies – Brazos River Kayak Fishing Guide
Shane Davies with his rattlesnake bass
We love kayak fishing, and we love breaking the rules. Shane Davies does both and it has paid off. He’s currently the biggest story sweeping the fishing blogosphere since the potential world record largemouth caught in Japan this summer. There’s a lot we could say to set up the interview, but he’s going to be able to tell the stories best – here’s Shane Davies from North Central Texas.
Shane, we could let the suspense build, but I know you’ve got a ton of stories up your sleeve for us today – let’s start off with the big one. Let’s hear all about the rattlesnake story.
What kinds of reactions have you gotten?
Now let’s back up a few steps – tell us about yourself, and how you got to be doing what you’re doing.
I read that you describe your fishing life in PK and AK – pre-kayak and after-kayak. What’s the attraction to ‘yaks?
This rattlesnake bass isn’t the only impressive story that’s come out of your adventures, haven’t you and your guests set some records?
Describe the Brazos river to us – what can people expect?
What’s a Brazos Trophy Slam?
Another innovation you’ve figured out is teasing up stripers in fresh water – tell us about that. Where did it come from?
We like to work in some conservation in every show – let’s talk about important issues facing the Brazos.

Song of the Week
Randy is in Nashville recording some new songs for the Fish Schtick Song of the Week, and he’s pretty excited about them. As soon as they get them mixed down, he’s going to debut his new fishing songs right here, so plan on that in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the “promo” Teeg. With the catch of a nice Bass with Rattlesnake, it’s time for Shane to get a “Rattlesnake rod” from Dragon’s Custom Rods. Makes you wander what would happen with our bull and garter snakes around here.
