Our guest today is Heather Sieber, Communication & Education Director at the RBFF – the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. These are the “Angler’s Legacy people,” the “Take Me Fishing” people. This week is National Fishing & Hunting Day, so it’s a timely opportunity to have Heather here to talk about what each of us can do to introduce new people to the sport of fishing – and why it matters.

Tons and tons of awareness for our cause, and big issues like: invasive species, trash and material pollution, SAFE Angling, everyday lifestyle stuff, AND … introducing new people to the sport, which we’re talking about today with our guest, Heather Sieber.

Guest Intro / Interview

Through licenses, permits and special taxes, America’s 34 million anglers and hunters generate $100,000 every 30 minutes—totaling more than $1.75 billion per year—for fish, wildlife and habitat programs. No one contributes more for conservation. As the Communications Director for the RBFF, Heather Sieber is one of the loudest voices out there working to ensure that we continue going in the right direction on this. Heather, welcome to the Fish Schtick!

Heather – I did a little digging on the internet to see what I could find out about you, and I located a photo of you holding an absolute slab of a bull redfish – let’s hear the story behind that catch.

Let’s hear about you – give us your life story in a couple of minutes.

Anybody with a heartbeat and a fishing pole has heard about Anglers’ Legacy, but let’s hear it from the guy who sits in the Communication Director’s chair – what’s it about and why does it matter?

- Tag up in this conversation on the big numbers 150,000 Ambassadors=$38 million for the fishing/boating industries
- Ambassadors introduce 4.4 people to the sport

It’s about taking more than kids fishing too, right?

The one-stop-shop on the web for people who are getting going in fishing is TakeMeFishing.org. What will people find there?

Premier destination for boaters and anglers to learn, plan and equip for a day on the water
12,000 places to boat and fish / Hot spots map links to all 50 states

What is the “Fishington social network?”

This week is National Hunting & Fishing Day. Tell us about that a little bit.

Conservation

We talk a lot about the link between fishing and conservation – it’s at the root of everything we do at Recycled Fish. What’s your take on it?

According to the Outdoor Foundation, fishing is the number one gateway activity to get kids ages 6-17 interested in outdoor activities.

When you boat and fish, you protect the environment.

It is conservation through participation.

When you purchase a fishing license, fishing equipment and motorboat fuel, money goes back into a pool to protect waterways and fisheries.
