Guest Intro
Our guests today are Cameron Mortenson of the Fiberglass Manifesto and Kevin Powell of Red Dirt Studio. Together, they have created a new online media project called Fishy Kid. Fishy Kid was inspired by two fathers who enjoy the sport of fly fishing and wanted to do their part in passing along the virtues of the outdoors to their children and families within the online fishing community. The hallmark of their project is a downloadable coloring book that lets kids collaborate with some of the greatest names in the world of outdoor artistry. Once kids create their masterpiece, they can send it in for a chance to win tons of cool prizes. The fishing industry – especially the fly fishing world – has rallied behind these guys and this project has blown up almost overnight. We’ll talk to Cameron and Kevin in just a bit, but first…

This is the first week for us to have TWO guests on the show, but it’s taken the union of the Fiberglass Manifesto and Red Dirt studios to make Fishy Kid, and the men behind them are Cameron Mortenson from South Carolina and Kevin Powell from Atlanta, Georgia. Guys, welcome to the Fish Schtick.
First off – either of you been out fishing lately? What’s been your best outing so far this year?
Cameron, you’ve got a JUMBO brown in your Facebook profile – what’s the story behind that fish?
You’re both dads, do you fish with your kids? What’s that like? What do they enjoy?
Cameron – the Fiberglass Manifesto is a clever idea, tell us a little about that.
You run some fun stories on there, what are a few of your favorites from the past few weeks?
What’s the attraction to glass?
Kevin, Red Dirt Studio is a very different kind of blog – explain why.
So you guys are both southern boys – South Carolina and Atlanta. There’s a fly fishing scene everywhere now, but what’s it like there? Is it a novelty or commonplace? Are you guys exclusively fly, or do you use a variety of tackle and tactics? What are the hot fisheries down there?
Let’s talk Fishy Kid – what is it and why are you doing it?
Tell about some of the artists that helped out, and how you came to know them.
“Take a kid fishing” has become ubiquitous, it’s like the tagline that everybody in any kind of public role related to fishing is saying. It’s like politicians and an American flag pin. What’s the big deal?
You’ve got a lot of support quickly – who is helping?
What have been the biggest challenges and the biggest rewards so far?
Any surprises so far?
Can people see any of the completed works of art?
If someone has a kid they want to get this to, how do they do it?
