On today’s Fish Schtick, Mikey Weir. Fans of the Fly Fishing Film Tour know Mikey as the man behind Burl Productions, who brought Soulfish to that collection of short films. Chum readers have seen him with preposterously large Slab of the Month entries, he’s got a jaw dropping Sierra rainbow buck in the current competition. If you subscribe to Fly Fisherman magazine, you’ll see him on the front cover of the latest issue, and he’s a Patagonia Fly Fishing Ambassador.

But Mikey Weir is known to another audience as a professional snowboarder. He started life on the South Island of New Zealand and moved to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada at age 2. By age 7 he was fly fishing and skateboarding. Over the years, Mikey also developed interests in painting, surfing, traveling and environmental activism.
In just a few minutes we’ll hear what life looks like through Mikey Weir’s eyes, and what he’s got cookin’ next.

Guest Intro / Interview
Mikey Weir runs BURL Productions, whose is to Educate, Entertain and Inspire. Their latest feature film, SOULFISH, is an adventure to the furthest corners of the globe in search of the soul of fly fishing. Mikey comes from a background in the Snowboard Industry and has brought that same action oriented approach to the world of Fly-Fishing.
Mikey, where have you been fishing lately, how’s it been? What’s your best fish story so far this year?
Moldy Chum – Mikey’s Slab of the Month
Not many people can say they’re a pro in more than one sport, how did you get from New Zealand to now?
You covered a lot of ground in Soulfish – where did you go, what was that like?
How many different locations are you fishing in a year, how many days are you on the water?
People think that doing something like what you’re doing must be glamorous – is it? What goes on behind the scenes that nobody knows about?
Conservation
Mikey, there’s an undercurrent – and sometimes an overt message – for conservation and stewardship of natural and wild places in your stuff, what are some of the issues that you think people need to be aware of, and what can we be doing?
End of The Line
I’d like to get in a plug for the movie End of the Line – we’re working now to get the author of this book, which has now been released as a documentary, onto the Fish Schtick. Check out www.EndofTheLine.com. This is The world’s first major documentary about the devastating effect of overfishing. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and there are screenings this summer across the U.S. Imagine an ocean without fish. Imagine your meals without seafood. Imagine the global consequences. This is the future if we do not stop, think and act.
Final Word
This time of year in catfish country, it gets hot and many of the river flows get low.
This is the time of year when the most vile, disgusting, putrid baits start to work really good for catfish.
Finn Horvath, our director of SAFE Angling, is a catfish enthusiast in Illinois, and he penned his ‘Ode to Stank,’ which I have abbreviated here.
Oh, Stank, my love for thee
In catching Catfish
Is unmatched!
You fill me with the urge
To vomit,
Involuntarily and uncontrollably,
You have me in your vile ways.
You bring tears to my eyes
With your putridness,
Your foul smell
Burning them
To near blindness
of all else.
I cannot remove your smell from me,
Or my clothes,
Regardless of how many washings,
Your stench a permanent part of me,
Always lingering and reminding me
Of our time together.
Long hours pass
As I wait with baited breath
Until we
Stinking
Catch another Catfish Together.
