Fishhound Year-End Fishing Report
Looking for a New Year’s getaway in Washington? Emerald Waters Anglers says the Yakima is one of the best choices, at least for trout. While cold, these fish still need to eat. Few if any will be paying attention to dry flies but keep your eye open for baetis and midge coming off. Otherwise look for the slower moving water and riffle drop offs where the trout can hang, have access to food, and don’t have to move much! Winter water levels like this put much of the river in reach for the wade angler. Try the Canyon stretch as there won’t be many people sharing the water.
What about the San Juan river in New Mexico? Sure – midges are hatching all day long. At the moment they are very small, size 22 to 28. The hatch is strongest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Try fishing BWO’s from 1 to 5 p.m. It is the time of year for eggs and larvae. Orange, peach and pink have been the best colors for eggs. Fish a red or orange larva behind it.
Up north, Chapman’s on Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota reports Isle Bay has over 10 inches of ice. Decent perch action in 11 feet of water using a jigging rap. Sunfish are in 9-11 foot of water using euro larva. Walleye are being caught in the morning and evenings, and Northern Pike are mixed in throughout the areas.

It was our biggest year yet in terms of funding and viability … it was looking kind of scary there, but we’re here and better than ever.
We launched Fish Itch – that’s been a major undertaking but could become absolutely breakthrough.
I went from speaking at consumer events to speaking at more national-sphere kinds of things.
Our 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon was the best ever. We raised more than the first two years combined.
Our “On Ice” tour is going to be the biggest that we’ve ever had.
Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds
Brought to you by BossTin – makers of environmentally friendly fishing weights for the fly and conventional tackle angler.
In Washington state, license fees for fishing and hunting licenses went up for the first time in a decade. But the bigger news was the removal of the Elwah Dam … and the Condit Dam on the White Salmon River. Two huge removals that will restore those rivers to their natural courses, helping to save wild salmon and steelhead. That’s good news.
In Iowa, Republican Governor Terry Branstad tried to move oversight of the state’s waters from the DNR over to the Department of Ag. The Department of Ag has always fought the DNR on clean water issues. In the end, DNR kept control but staff positions on analyzing water quality were eliminated. No reporting – no problems. Thanks, Gov. I drink that water.
In your supermarket, the FDA approved it this year: human DNA can now be spliced into the salmon you’re eating. People! It’s what’s for dinner.
It was a devastating weather year. In the southeast tornadoes wiped away towns and lives, as well as shutting down access to lakes across the region. In Missouri and Arkansas – crazy high water and flooding, Table Rock was at record high levels – all the big spring bass tournaments were cancelled or postponed. Later drought struck the south and Texas was the epicenter – entire lakes and ponds simply dried up. No good news there.
Invasive species like Asian Carp and Zebra Mussels continued their spread across the country, popping up in dozens of new waters. However, a laboratory in New York found a bacteria that is 100% effective on killing zebra mussels in the lab – maybe a solution on the way.
Vermont and Maryland became the first two states to ban felt-soled wading boots. Alaska follows on January 1, 2012.
In pro bass fishing, Kevin VanDam erased virtually any doubt that he’s the greatest bass fisherman in the world by winning the Angler of the Year title for a seventh time, and winning yet another Bassmaster Classic.
In Washington, DC whether to ban lead fishing tackle was on the table again. Lead remains legal. Catch shares, the RESTORE act for the Mississippi Delta, The Fisheries Science Improvement Act – those are all still percolating as we enter 2012 but the Clean Water Act did get a little help from the Obama Administration this year.
How about a Stewardship Tip to end the year? Use less stuff. If there’s one thing that became clear to me this year it was that the take-make-waste cycle, the culture of consumption, is what’s ultimately got to stop if we want healthy waters for generations to come. The solution’s not complicated. Use less stuff.

Photo Of the Year
One of my favorite images from 2011. I was shooting in Denali National Park and Preserve, AK using this portion of the Alaska Range as my back drop. It was pretty late, we were shooting cooking stoves for Optimus so I needed it to be almost dark which really highlights the flame. All the sudden, I saw a really bright light peeking over the mountains for a moment I couldn’t quite figure out what it was…then I realized it was the moon rising. I quickly adjusted grabbed a long telephoto lens got this image.
