Fishhound Fishing Report
Way Down Upon The Suwannee River in Florida, a record number of boats on the water during the holiday week. Saltwater species like speckled trout and redfish are the primary targets for most of the anglers, but largemouth bass are a good bet too, says Suwannee River Guide Service.
Todd’s Fishing Guides up in the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota reports that – unbelievably – we enter January with open water on some of the Brainerd area lakes. Vehicle traffic on any of the lakes is not advised, but you should find 6” of ice in most places, and the fishing is good as you head north to places like Red Lake.
Out in Pennsylvania, TCO Fly Shop says that Penns Creek is still up and moving, but it’s fishable. Think streamers, big stonefly nymphs and get out there.

Guest Intro: Thad Robison is one of a very small handful of Fish Schtick Regulars. That’s what he gets for doing such interesting things. The latest in his adventures, like Motiv Fishing’s latest excursion to Belize, and loading up to hit the road for another Fly Fishing Film Tour.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds
On the Yellowstone and Kalamazoo Rivers, terrible oil spills last year. Congress agreed before the recess to double fines for reckless operators and strengthen safety rules for oil and gas pipelines. Good news in the wake of bad news.
High Point, North Carolina hosts the world’s largest custom rod building event this February. It’s the 25th & 26th, 2011 in High Point, NC – make plans now to attend.
On your digital device: The Bass Edge Podcast is back. After a year off, hosts Aaron Martin and Steve Brigman are talking bass fishing with the country’s top anglers, answering listener questions and giving away prizes again in 2012.
Across the ice belt – shocking warm temps are what everybody’s talking about. No ice at all for many of the ice fishing states, and shaky ice for those up north. Trucks, ice houses, ATVs and snowmobiles – plenty of reports of all going through, not to mention the people in or on them.
Down in Florida – the other end of the temperature spectrum – a freak cold snap will pull January temps below freezing and that could mean more than damage to the citrus crop. Last time Florida got a deep freeze it meant devastation for snook fisheries, and all of the inshore fish took a big hit.
Meanwhile in the mountains – Reno could have it’s first snow-less season in a century and Montana’s below normal for snowfall so far. After a high water year in 2011, could 2012 be as dry as it was in the south last year? All the climate guys said this was coming.
Montana’s holding trout eggs hostage. Yep, Governor Brian Schweitzer is using the state’s valuable trout eggs as leverage to force the Interior Department to allow his buffalo plans and other initiatives.
This week’s Stewardship Tip: Don’t leave your car idling. In fact, just parking further away in the parking lot will help reduce the time you’re circling looking for the perfect parking place – and parking further away could help with your new year’s fitness resolution, too.
