Fishhound Fishing Report

Froggy Waters Outdoors reports 5 Star Fishing in their November 28 report for the Eno River in North Carolina. Fishing is HOT right now for bass, crappie, white bass and catfish.  Nearly every stretch of the river has active fish, particularly the area below the Red Mill Rd launch.

Captain Lain Goodwin says c’mon down to Key Largo, Florida. Redfish and trout are on the flats and the water is clear. Redfish from 20-26 inches are tailing all over, and they’re catching some big trout up to 28 inches. The bite should stay good until water temperatures start dropping below 70.

On the Missouri River in Montana, Headhunters Guide Service says that the color pink has started to creep into their daily regimen. It is not required as of yet, but the writing is on the wall. The water temps are still falling about 1 degree every 4 days at a Saturday water temperature of 41F. We can still expect fish to travel to the fly for another couple degrees. We think and hope.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds
Brought to you by BossTin – makers of environmentally friendly fishing weights for the fly and conventional tackle angler.

Good News in Florida, The Florida Fishing Academy, a non-profit created to teach at-risk youth both life and on-the-water skills, got a big help from Guy Harvey and a three-year, $30,000-a-year contract.

Minnesota – St. Paul, Minnesota to be precise – that’s ground zero for ice fishing enthusiasts with the St. Paul Ice Fishing and Winter Sports Expo this weekend. More exhibitors than ever before – Recycled Fish will be there as the kickoff for the Recycled Fish “On Ice” Tour.

In Nebraska – more places to fish and hunt. Open Fields and Waters, the program that pays landowners to open private acres to public walk-in hunting and fishing access, added 211 new contracts in 2011. That’s good news for ME.

Palo Alto, California – Beyond Searsville Dam is throwing a benefit dinner with Yvon Chouinard. They wanna get rid of the Searsville Dam, which blocks steelhead from over ten miles of historic spawning and rearing habitat upstream and negatively alters habitat downstream. All proceeds from the dinner will go to the next phase of their ongoing efforts for responsible removal of the dam.

Kentucky panfishing should be good in the next few years. Lake Cumberland and six other lakes got big stockings of crappies and redear sunfish this fall. Look for foot-long sunfish in the next couple of years.

‘Tis the season – Holiday Tackle Box Auctions continue on eBay through December 15 but enter “USA Ice Team” in the search window and you’ll also find autographed jerseys from B.A.S.S. Elite Anglers to support USA Ice Team. Give gifts that do something good.

On your computer – Rebel Lures will be giving away the fiftieth anniversary Skeeter bass boat, loaded to the hilt. The giveaway is at the Bassmaster Classic and to enter, it’s as easy as liking their Facebook page and entering your info.

This week’s Stewardship Tip: Winterize your boat. Some parts should be done at the lake, some should be done at home. The key – don’t move invasive species but don’t get chemicals in our waters, either.

Guest Intro
Richard Louv’s biography ends like this: he would rather fish than write. But between “Richard Louv is…” and “…rather fish than write,” is the story of a man who has written eight books and coined the term “Nature Deficit Disorder.” The book that kicked off an international conversation about the relationship with children and nature is entitled Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder. His latest book, The Nature Principle: Human Restoration and the End of Nature-Deficit Disorder offers a new vision of the future, in which our lives are as immersed in nature as they are in technology. This future, available to all of us right now, offers better psychological, physical and spiritual health for people of every age. He’ll expand on that – and I’m sure, share some fishing stories, on today’s Fish Schtick.

Guest Intro / Interview

If you stacked up all of Richard Louv’s awards for his contributions to society and the environment, they’d encircle a California Redwood. OK – that’s not a scientific calculation or anything, but he’s a decorated guy. And you’ve probably read his stuff in The New York Times, The Washington Post or one of his eight books. Maybe you saw him on NBC’s Today Show or the CBS Evening News, or ABC’s Good Morning America. Maybe you heard him on NPR’s Morning Edition, Fresh Air, or Talk of the Nation. If you missed him in all those places, unbelievable as it may seem, we got him to hang out with us here on The Fish Schtick.

It’s a treat to have you on the show. We always start off the same way – talking about fishing. So – found any time on the water this summer?

We reference your work all the time, and among the angling audience, unbelievable though it may seem, some don’t know about this Nature Deficit Disorder thing. Can you lay it out for us?

Why are people growing away from the outdoors?

What are the trends doing now? Are we trending back toward the outdoors since the recession began in 2008, or not really?

Your latest book lays out The Nature Principle and envisions a future where people are restored to nature. What is the Nature Principle and what does this look like?

Are you familiar with the Outdoor Foundation study in 2010 that linked fishing to being the #1 thing to get kids involved in outdoor sports?

Your personal connection to the outdoors must have come from somewhere?

There is a hybridization in effect – we go outdoors but we take digital devices with us. GPS, cameras, video cameras, cell phones, fish finders … and that becomes part of the outdoor experience. Is this the new normal? Is it better to be outside with a cell phone than not outside at all?

Richard J. Degrandpre wrote ‘Ritalin Nation: Rapid-Fire Culture And The Transformation Of Human Consciousness.’ It has a lot of overlap with what you write about in your books – familiar with this?

Everybody listening to this is someone who engages with nature at some level, in some way. We’re the choir. What do we need to do?

Taking it back to fishing … any adventures planned for the coming year?
