Around the World of Fishing – October 12, 2010
Across the Midwest: A new study shows that genetically modified corn is hurting our waters. Wanna catch more and bigger fish? Insist on organic.
In the Catskills: A felt soled wader ban is being considered on stream portions on city-owned property as a measure to help fight invasive species like Didymo.
Washington State: Unheard of – they’re opening an overnight salmon fishery on one stretch of the Columbia River. Normally that’s a daylight hours deal, night fishing has been illegal to prevent poaching. Now they want to increase pressure on hatchery steelhead to ensure only native fish make it to the spawning grounds.
Normal, Illinois: Jerry McKinnis | Wired2Fish | BASS Federation Nation got together for a meeting of the minds this week. Everybody’s excited about the bright future of bass fishing under Jerry’s direction, read more at Jerry’s blog or Wired2Fish.com.
Colorado has a new state record catfish – get this story. A 20 year old woman caught the fish, it was just the third fish she had ever caught … in her life! Caught it on a night crawler from the Aurora Reservoir, that place is red hot. In just over a year it’s turned out 3 state record fish. Oh – the catfish? 43 pounds! That’s a MAMMOTH channel cat.
On the Border: Careful, if you’re fishing one of those world-class bass fisheries down on the US / Mexico border. Reports of drug smugglers and freshwater pirates – including one murder of a guy on a jet ski – make bass fishing on Lake Falcon less appealing. Haven’t heard anything so worrisome from Lake Amistad.
Utah has new regulations to encourage anglers to keep smaller bass, making for more big fish. It’s selective harvest, versus strict Catch and Release.
This week’s Stewardship Tip – Six Seconds. If your car is idling more than six seconds, turning it off will reduce emissions. Save fuel and put less bad stuff in the atmosphere, that’s good for fish, fisheries and fishing.
