Scientific Anglers has been around for 60 years. They’re responsible for much of what fly fishing is today.  The contemporary floating fly line? They made that. They’re still making cool new stuff, like the amazing Sharkskin technology that continues to transform the sport.  Tim Pommer is one of the guys who makes that stuff – he’s one of the guys that they refer to as a member of the “angling scientist and design team.” Tim’s in Minneapolis and I dug up a pretty sensational photo of him holding up a big, long muskie with a fly called “The Ghetto Tramp” hanging out of it’s maw – we’ll get that story and more on today’s Fish Schtick.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

September 24, 2010

Across the Country: It’s once again National Hunting and Fishing Day this Saturday, Sept. 25. Go play outside.

Bad News: Sensational fish kills in the gulf with startling images of floating fish. Could be just the seasonal dead zones created by all the pollution we send down the Mighty Mississippi, but probably was made worse by Deepwater Horizon.

New Orleans – Get ready, not only is the Bassmaster Classic headed your way in 2011, so is IFTD, the Fly Tackle Trade Show. Everybody wants to help the gulf.

In Louisiana: BASS Elite Angler Jeff Connella will spend the daywith about 3,000 kids. He’s the master of ceremonies for the National Hunting and Fishing Day festivities there, which includes everything from pond fishing for catfish to skinning alligators. No kidding.

Washington – the state, not our nation’s capital: Fish and Wildlife Commission is considering restriction on the use of lead fishing tackle at thirteen lakes with nesting loons.

Down the Coast in California: The battle over Marine Life Protected Areas may have a truce in a new proposal from the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans. It lays out a protected area that all stakeholder groups can agree upon.

In Minnesota – Rich Lindgren was DQued from a bass tournament that he would have won … for tweeting. Can’t use a cell phone except in an emergency.

On the internet: Jay Kumar – the guy who started Bass Fan – just launched a new site, Bass Parade. I have a feeling it’s the bass fisherman’s Moldy Chum.

This week’s Stewardship Tip – It’s not just boats that move around invasive plants. Boots and waders can do it too. Be careful to wash seeds from the folds and always clean, inspect and dry between waters.

3M is the company behind Scientific Anglers, so that puts you in the Twin Cities. Minnesota is a huge fishing state but not necessarily where people first go in their head when they think about fly fishing.

What’s your take from this year’s fly show and the fly fishing industry?

SA makes all kinds of stuff, not just fly lines. What’s the stuff we find on fly shop shelves that you had a hand in?

What are you working on now?

Conservation

Scientific Anglers does work with many of the biggest names in fisheries conservation, from Trout Unlimited to Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. Any projects that you’ve been involved with, or anything that the company is putting special emphasis on right now?

The lead ban issue is hot right now – part of the sinking fly line formula at least at some point has been tungsten, a non-toxic alternative. What’s your take on the lead deal?
