Bill Farnum has been an avid fly fisherman as long as he can remember. He picked up his first fly rod on a trip to the Upper Sacramento River while attending college at UC Davis. Today he lives in Sherwood, Oregon with his wife Beth and their two kids, Ella and Alex. They’ve got another one on the way in March 2010. Their first daughter, Ella, has Rett syndrome, which led him to create Casting 4 A Cure – an organization dedicated to helping researchers find a cure for Rett  Syndrome in the next 10 years, while helping support Rett families in the here and now. While addressing a serious, and deeply personal issue for Bill, their events manage to be a lot of fun, and raise some serious cash for the cause.

Around the world of fishing in 120 seconds – January 19, 2010

Good News from Montana: 28,730 acres in mineral leases in the legendary Badger-Two Medicine area have been retired to the Bureau of Land Management. Props to Senator Max Baucus and Trout Unlimited.

Sad News in Louisiana: The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is closing facilities, selling vehicles, and closing their monthly magazine due to budget shortfalls.

Washington State – The North Fork Stillaguamish River, downstream from the Whitehorse Bridge to the French Creek confluence has re-opened to steelhead fishing. They met broodstock goals for winter steelhead. Release wild fish, bonk those hatchery brats.

On your television: WFN Green with Emmanuel Belliveau is now airing on Fridays at 7:30 pm eastern. The series focuses upon important conservation issues.

Florida – A follow-up on last week’s story about cold weather fish kills. Snook appear to have been hardest hit, bonefish and tarpon took a big hit as well. In response, Florida Fish and Wildlife closed harvest on these three species.

This week’s Recycled Fish Stewardship Tip: Switch to paperless billing to save trees. Trees are good for our waters, so they’re good for fish and fishing. Plus, many companies will plant trees when you make the switch.

Brian’s Quote of the Week

“If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or Fight Like Hell.”
-Lance Armstrong

First off, Bill – you live in a place that has some great fishing. Had time to do any?

Tell us about some of the epic fishing that has happened at your past events.

We don’t want to dwell on the tough stuff, but give people an understanding of what Rett syndrome is and what it means for your family and families who deal with it.

What is Casting 4 A Cure funding?

How much have you raised so far, and what can that money do?

Give us a lineup of who is involved in terms of sponsors.

What’s on tap for events this year?

You also have some cycling events, let’s hear about those.

Any parting words?
