Zeno Hromin is an author and a guide specializing on catching stripers in the surf. Putting on countless hours fishing the South Shore and Montauk, he’s become an expert in the art of surf casting. His daily Surfcaster’s Journal blog has turned into the Surfcaster’s Journal Online Magazine, the first issue is out right now, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Zeno Hromin’s book, “The Art of Surfcasting,” has been called the ‘Bible of Surfcasting.” But Zeno isn’t a writer who had a passion for striper fishing. He’s a striper expert who was willing to share the secrets of the sport. He punched “The Art of Surfcasting” and “The Hunt for Big Stripers” one keystroke at a time, hunt and peck method. Publishers wouldn’t touch it – “you’ll do well to sell 500 copies,” they said. That was two years and six printings ago. Zeno – welcome to The Fish Schtick.

What’s your favorite fish story from the past year?

In your opening editorial in the magazine, you say that no group of anglers is more dedicated to the sport than Surfcasters – why is that?

What is the surfcasting community like?

What are the species you’re usually going for? Do people get hung up on one species?

There are guys who surf around in wet suits at night fishing for stripers – are you one of those guys?

There are some brutal photos in this first Surfcaster’s Journal, including a guy getting smashed by a wave. Have you ever been pulled off by a wave?

What’s the closest you have come to dying in pursuit of your sport?

Talk about the gear that makes for success.

Is your game a seasonal one or is it year-‘round?

Do other kinds of fishing appeal to you?

You do the guiding and you write the books and publish this magazine and manage a blog every day – it sounds like a dream come true for most people who have the obsession, but you still have a ‘real’ job and a family in the midst of all that, right?

COVER-240x300

If people wanted to take a day on the water with you, what would that look like and how would they set it up?
