Fishhound Fishing Report

Fishing 24-7 Guide Service gives Alabama’s Lewis Smith Lake four stars. They’re catching stripers on umbrella rigs, down lined live bait, and in line floats to target them. Look for fish in depths ranging from 25 - 40 feet. The night bite should heat up in the coming weeks.

Up in Tennessee, Old Hickory Lake is also fishing well. Adams Guide Service had an incredible day this week - over 30 walleye and sauger and a myriad of other fish. They caught their fish on 5/8th oz jigs tipped with minnows bouncing the bottom.

Meanwhile in Oregon, you might think about fishing Coos Bay. Conditions for crabbing and rockfish and lingcod angling in Coos Bay should be improving as the mud and heavy freshwater runoff subsides from recent storms. Using a jig with a twister tail has been a great bait for catching rockfish. Anglers have been catching lingcod with a herring floated under a bobber.

Fishhound Fishing Report
Trout’s Fly Fishing in Colorado is pointing people to the Blue River. With flows holding flat at around 55 c.f.s., the tailwater section of the Blue can be a great day of fun. Concentrate your deep water nymphing in the troughs and "blue holes" found throughout the first 3/4 mile stretch directly below Lake Dillon. Long fine leaders tapered down to 6x fluorocarbon and an assortment of small midges, mayflies, eggs, worms and mysis shrimp should help your chances.
TCO Fly Shop in State College, PA reports that flows are just above average but Spring Creek looks great. The best time of day to fish seems to be about Noon – 3PM. Slump busters have been a great streamer pattern all winter. Lots of reports of BWO's, too.
The best fly fishing in the country right now might be on Montana’s Madison River. Montana Troutfitters says that when you find fish, the fishing has been on fire with the winter standards - midge pupae and larvae, worms, eggs, and small stoneflies. Don’t forget, the river is CLOSED FROM MARCH 1ST to THIRD SATURDAY IN MAY from Quake to McAtee Bridge, so if you want good midge fishing on the Madison now you'll need to head to the Lower Madison. For a free report on waters near you, www.fishhound.com (http://www.fishhound.com).

Guest Intro
Derek Grzelewski (http://www.derekgrzelewski.com/about.html) (www.derekgrzelewski.com (http://www.derekgrzelewski.com)) joins us today from New Zealand. New Zealand! The place is a place of legends. A legendary destination for trout fishermen, for sure. One of those places that fly fishermen put on their bucket list, and that many will never see. Only time will tell if his new book, The Trout Diaries: A Year of Fly Fishing in New Zealand, will join the status of a Trout Bum or a River Why in modern fly fishing literature, but the ingredients are all there. It’s funny, full of big personalities, adventures that feel great but attainable, and written like someone who has dirt under his fingernails and a diploma on the wall. That’s a long way to say that this is an awesome book, one we enjoyed reading, and you’re going to love hearing some of the stories within it from the author’s mouth.

Fishhound Fishing Report
On Mosquito Lagoon in Florida, Harry Goode’s outdoor shop is reporting four star fishing for Spotted Trout with nice sizes. Water is very clean so use tan, white, orange colors for seducers and clouser minnows. Larger Redfish are in large schools averaging 20 fish per school with and average weight of 10-15 lbs. Use ghost shrimp by Enrico Puglisi with tan or rootbeer colors.
Steve Smith Outdoors in Oregon says that the Sandy is fishing pretty well with 50% of the catch being natives...largest so far is 16 Lbs.
Down in Central Texas, Buchannan Lake is four stars if you ask Rick Ransom. His guide service fished Saturday with a cold front coming in. They anchored in 30ft of water, fished 3 turns off the bottom with large minnows, and had steady action for about 2 hrs. They caught 17 throwbacks and 7 keepers – we’re guessing stripers and white bass – until everybody got cold and went in happy.

Guest Intro
We’ve all been on the road so today we just wanted to catch up!

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds
Brought to you by BossTin - makers of environmentally friendly fishing weights for the fly and conventional tackle angler.

It’s National Invasive Species Awareness week, everybody! Remember to Inspect, Clean and Dry your Boats, Boots & Waders between waders. Never dump your bait bucket – or certainly your aquarium.

Arkansas has a new state record bass – a big, bulging-eyed dead one now. State’s gonna study it’s DNA, find out if it was a pure northern-strain fish or if it had Florida genetics. Paul Crowder of Forrest City set the new record on Lake Dunn near Wynne. 16 pounds, 5 ounces – breaks the 35-year old record by a single ounce.

Speaking of bass, in Shreveport, Louisiana Chris Lane of Guntersville, Alabama wins the BASSMASTER Classic with 51 pounds and 6 ounces of largemouth bass from the Red River.

If you live in Utah, you need to be fishing Scofield Reservoir. Zane Nielsen of Pleasant Grove pulled a new catch-and-release record tiger trout through a hole in the ice there a couple weeks ago. In February, the reservoir produced not one -- but two -- Utah state record fish.

Tournaments on Missouri’s Table Rock are cancelled for this weekend – tornadoes smashed the marina the anglers were using this week, tragic.

In Tackle News, Sebile’s D&S Crankbait – the crankbait that’s got just a single hook instead of a mouthful of trebles – was named Field & Stream’s Best of the Best for 2012.

Wherever you fish for trout - or read about it - Kirk Deeter, renowned journalist, editor and author, steps up as the new editor of TROUT Magazine, Trout Unlimited’s flagship publication. Deeter replaces Steve Kinsella,</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report

Lake Chelan Adventures says the Lake Trout fishing absolutely could not be better. 19 lake trout in 4 hours one day this week. Listen to this: The Ace Hi-Fly by Silverhorde with the Smile Blade by Mack Lures in front is what’s working.

Monheim Guide Service says that there are a lot of perch are biting in 10 – 14 feet of water and better than a foot of ice on South Twin Lake near Conover, Wisconsin.

Over on Erie, Erie Outfitters near Cleveland says that western basin walleye fishing is off with a bang. Trolling Perch Deep Huskys 70 feet back at 1 mph is tops right now. Huge limits are being caught with 8 Pound walleyes just being average. Steelhead fishing is also going well. Grand is the best right now ,smaller rivers are getting low and clear so conditions can be tough but no lack of fish. Catch ‘em with flies or drifting.

For a free report on waters near you, www.fishhound.com (http://www.fishhound.com).

The RESTORE Act hits fever pitch as leaders from around the country head to Washington, DC to convince Senators to vote to put BP Oil Spill dollars into Gulf Coast restoration.

Could be bad news for fisheries in California, where the Army Corps of Engineers wants to remove virtually all trees and shrubs on federal levees. The California Department of Fish and Game is gonna sue them. The Corps developed its national levee vegetation removal policy in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. One size does not fit all.

Fishhound Fishing Report

Sport Fish Colorado reports that ice fishing has been a little funky, and you might watch the ice near shore – soft in a lot of places. The bite seems to be picking up at Antero Reservoir, if you want to give that a shot.

Down in Texas, you might try Grapevine Lake near Dallas. The water is clear, and black bass are good on watermelon Texas rigged worms, watermelon finesse jigs, lipless crankbaits, and Jackall Squad Minnow jerkbaits along the main lake points. Crappie are biting good on minnows, white bass are good on slabs, and catfish are fair to good on nightcrawlers and cut shad.

Captain Brian Brown reports that bass and crappies are going good on Kentucky Lake – and listen to this – nothing is out-fishing the Alabama Rig. Lots of current in the lake as they try to keep it at winter pool.

For a free report on waters near you, www.fishhound.com (http://www.fishhound.com).

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Brought to you by BossTin (http://bosstin.com/) - makers of environmentally friendly fishing weights for the fly and conventional tackle angler. Did you hear that Washington State just tried to pass a ban on lead?

The United States Ice Fishing Team packs its bags for a trip to Kazikstan next month, where the current world champs will face off against ice anglers from around the world to see who can take home the gold medal.

Across the Ice Belt, events continue to be cancelling or rescheduling on the Recycled Fish “On Ice” Tour but from the Dakotas and Minnesota, Wisconsin – that northern tier of states – and north, ice is looking good.

Along the Washington / Oregon border, 2012 seasons are set for salmon and sturgeon. Expecting a strong run of spring chinook salmon but a further decline in the white sturgeon.

Also in Washington,</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report

Montana Troutfitters gives their nod to the Missouri river as a 4-star winter fishery. They say, “the Mo should be one of your go to's in the winter months … being a tailwater you have warmer flows than your freestones do.” All of the Montana freestone rivers are filling with ice and slush as we speak.

In Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay has striped bass moving down the coast along the Ocean City area beaches. The season’s closing but white perch and near the Susquehanna, yellow perch, are still a good option.

Jay’s Bass Bustin’ Guide Service in Florida reports that the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes is excellent right now. A day of fishing might mean 30 bass averaging 6 pounds. Fish are being caught outside the grass line in 4-5 ft of water, and the best bite is in the afternoon.

Ivan Orsic (http://yukongoesfishing.blogspot.com/) may be better known to the internet set as Yukon Goes Fishing. His work has popped up everywhere – the Orvis Friday Fly Fishing Film Festival, Fly Fishilicious, Chi Wulff, lots more.

At is own blog – Yukon Goes Fishing – his bio reads like this. Brace yourself. “I’m a graduate student studying fluvial geomorphology, applied hydrology, and environmental geochemistry at a fine institution in Missoula, MT. Originally from the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the eastern US, I have always been a fan of all sorts of fishing. However, during a "family" trip up to Alaska when I was in high school, I fell in love with the sport of fly fishing.

That’s turned into a pretty sweet set of video blogs and the one that made us finally track him down for the show: Silver & Gold featuring Yukon Cornelius. It’s a perfect Fish Schtick holiday treat.

Around the world of fishing in 120 seconds – December 16, 2011

Good news for little fish in Colorado. Two rare minnows are once again swimming in the Arkansas River thanks to pioneering research efforts at the John Mumma Native Aquatic Species Restoration Facility. Plains minnows and suckermouth minnows are on the threatened and endangered lists, but new rearing and stocking efforts have them on a path to recovery.

Fishhound Fishing Report

Off the California Coast, Channel Island Sportfishing reports great fishing out of Ventura and Oxnard. Tremendous catches of Rockfish, and they’re doing well on Lingcod, too. Expect a few Calico Bass and Sheepshead mixed in.

Clear across the country in New York, changing flows has helped the fishing on the Salmon River. Steelhead have been eating eggs and beads in Ontario-roe, Honey, and Candy Corn. Chasin’ Tail Adventures gives it four stars out of five.

Between the two in Utah, reports are solid for the Green River. Anglers are doing well with large terrestrial imitations (like grasshoppers and black ants) and using a scud, shrimp or imitation-salmon-egg trailer. Often the fish are attracted to the larger presentation and then hit the smaller one.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news for the Gulf. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, announced this week that the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is launching a new Gulf of Mexico initiative, which will focus $50 million over three years in conservation assistance to farmers and ranchers in priority areas along seven major rivers that drain to the gulf. We like it.

Maryland DNR is offering Clean Marina Seminars for marinas and boatyards. If you run one or work at one, get to one of these events! They’re free.

In Washington, DC – environmental groups are once again calling for the ban of lead sinkers and fishing weights. Nothing new there.

In Toronto – a city-wide ban on the sale of shark fins, somewhere Conway Bowman is smiling.

Florida hosts the first PAA Tour event of the year in January – yep, January. The professional fishing season gets underway BEFORE the BASSMASTER Classic in … January on Lake Toho.

Iowa – confirmation that Silver Carp have entered the Iowa Great Lakes is unfortunate news.</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report

Froggy Waters Outdoors reports 5 Star Fishing in their November 28 report for the Eno River in North Carolina. Fishing is HOT right now for bass, crappie, white bass and catfish. Nearly every stretch of the river has active fish, particularly the area below the Red Mill Rd launch.

Captain Lain Goodwin says c’mon down to Key Largo, Florida. Redfish and trout are on the flats and the water is clear. Redfish from 20-26 inches are tailing all over, and they’re catching some big trout up to 28 inches. The bite should stay good until water temperatures start dropping below 70.

On the Missouri River in Montana, Headhunters Guide Service says that the color pink has started to creep into their daily regimen. It is not required as of yet, but the writing is on the wall. The water temps are still falling about 1 degree every 4 days at a Saturday water temperature of 41F. We can still expect fish to travel to the fly for another couple degrees. We think and hope.

Fishhound Fishing Report
In Texas, Texas Parks & Wildlife reports clear water and good fishing at Victor Braunig lake near San Antonio. Black bass are good near the jetty and dam, Striped bass near the pier and Dead Tree Point. Redfish are fair if you wanna run spoons on downriggers around the jetty and dam. Channel catfish and blue cats are biting good, too.

Mike Davis Outdoors reports that fishing on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee was tough this week with the wind, but if you could find a spot that was not so choppy, you’d catch ‘em good. One day this week his guest caught over 30 bass. All fish we caught on topwater, crankbaits and swimbaits. Fun way to fish.

At the North Landing River in Virginia, Dewey Mullins says that bass are very active. Crappie have not schooled up yet, but you can still get one with a minnow, jig or small spinner. The white perch have schooled up and will take a small spinner, night crawler or a minnow or jig. Stripers are in the creeks, too.

Fishhound Fishing Report

Clear Lake, Texas on the Gulf Coast near reports that fishing is good to excellent for Sea Trout and sand Trout with some spottail bass mixed in. Most of the fish are being caught under the birds. Conditions should remain consistently good to excellent until after Thanksgiving.

AC Charters reports that the speckled trout are going like crazy with cooling waters of Florida up around St. Petersburg, and 60 fish a day on the fly rod is possible right now.

Up the coast and inland, it’s giant brown trout and steelhead on Great Lakes Tributaries. Drifting and swinging flies is working near Buffalo, NY if you ask Get The Net Fishing Charters.

Good News for waters in Nebraska – the Keystone XL pipeline project is on hold until they can figure out how to run it further from our main aquifer … and, probably, until after the next election cycle.

Good News for waters in Colorado - Colorado Parks and Wildlife's boat inspectors, working with other state-certified partners, checked more than 420,000 boats for aquatic nuisance species in 2011. Quagga or zebra mussels were found on eight boats, which were decontaminated by the inspectors prior to entering Colorado waters.

In Louisiana, a settlement with Temple Inland following an August fish kill that killed over 160,000 fish and 400,000 freshwater mussels. The Pearl River fish kill from illegal paper mill discharge was valued at a $816,000 loss. Louisiana will get about half that amount and has already begun restocking efforts.

North Carolina - Don't miss your chance to join Ryan and Krissie Newman at the Ryan Newman Foundation 6th Annual Charity Fishing Tournament. Kevin Van Dam, Mark Zona, and other pro anglers will be there.</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report
The fishing’s great near Cheyenne, Wyoming but not for what you’d think. PK Lures reports five-star fishing for bluegill in Sloans Lake in Cheyenne. These are some big bluegills, too.
How about South Dakota? On lower lake Oahe, the fishing is excellent at Gettysburg. There are a lot of smaller walleye, but some really nice ones too. Lots of northern and smallmouth are being caught also. Anglers are having the best luck with spinners and crawlers in 16-25 feet. Minnows are also working well. Salmon have been hit-and-miss. Look for the salmon bite to take off in a week or so, and plan for some good ice fishing later on in the year.
In Ohio, the Ohio Steelhead Drifters would point you toward Rocky River. The water has dropped and the sun is out but there are a good number of fish that have moved into the river system. Swinging and stripping big streamers will be your best bet.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds
Good News! In Washington – BOOM! Following the removal of the Elwah dam, the White Salmon dam began to fall this week. Fishing in there – by the way – is closed right now.

In Florida, it’s a showdown – anglers who wanna fish wherever they want versus the National Park Service who says they might want to protect certain sensitive areas. Could part of Biscayne Bay get closed to fishing? Maybe. Would that help or hurt recreational angling? Depends on who you ask.

In Colorado, the boat ramps are closing for the season at places like Spinney Mountain, Ridgeway and Eleven Mile. Ice-up is comin’.

In Mississippi they’re stocking Alligator Gar in Bee Lake to help control Asian Carp. A brilliant idea if you ask me. Restore the giants!

In Court - a Roadless Rule ruling might have just opened up pristine wildlands to development once and for all,</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report
In Utah, the trout fishing is OK, but if you want crazy fast action, go to Utah Lake near Provo. The white bass action is hot! Try using action lures tipped with bait. You might also pick up other species, including walleye or largemouth bass. They’re catching fish in every part of the lake.
Five star fishing on Minnesota’s Leech Lake – Big, Big, Big fall walleyes, and lots of them. Leisure Outdoor Adventures has a great report with pictures on the Fishhound site.
Pennsylvania’s Yellow Breeches Creek is fishing good, but Big Spring is even better. Hopper and dropper with a cress bug or scud is the ticket in this creek. That’s the word from Custom Tied Flies and Guide Service.

Good news? No – GREAT NEWS. The people of King Salmon, Alaska voted to prevent Pebble Mine. The people have spoken, and the Pebble Partnership said they won’t go where people don’t want them. Hooray.

Bad News. The Pebble people have already filed a lawsuit. They want their mine, dammit! Big mining has big money and their word means nothing. Nothing! These evil international interests say dig, baby dig.

Out of Brainerd, Minnesota, Al Lindner is being inducted into the IGFA Hall of Fame – that makes sense.

Up in BC – anemic salmon. We don’t like this. These yellow fish have a virus that has probably spread to wild fish from those dangerous fish farms. Not good.

In the Chesapeake Bay – how many Menhaden do we really need? More than we’ve got. Declining stocks of this important forage fish ain’t good, either. Good report on MidCurrent.

West Virginia and the Dunkard Creek Fish Kill – did fracking cause it? Looks like maybe that’s the case. Super-clean natural gas, right?

From Florida – a guy from Milton, Florida just broke the Florida state record for flathead catfish with a 55 pound fish. I’d look for this record to get smashed over and over in the next 10 years.</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report
Confluence Outfitters says Battle Creek has been fishing well. There is plenty of water, but not too much. The spring chinook are spawning, so the native rainbows are on the egg grab. And there are good hatches, so the rainbows are looking up.
Colorado’s Sprague Lake is fishing great if you ask Kirk’s Fly shop. About a size 16 Flashback Pheasant Tail, trailed with a pink San Juan Worm #16 or an egg pattern is gonna git ‘er done. On top you could use a Size 20 Yaegers Neversink Gnat or a Parachute Adams.
Out of Panama City, Florida, The spanish mackerel are in full force. Spoons, small diving lipped lures, Christmas tree rigs & smaller live baits will all work. The fall kings are not far behind. There is still an occasional sailfish around as well. Contact Captain Linda’s Kayak fishing for more – and a great Baja Fish Taco recipe.

It’s been a while since we did a regular episode – the last couple have been video specials, so we wanted to show the love for our audio podcast amigos. Brian / Moldy Chum News (http://www.moldychum.com/)
If Brian WAS here, I know what he’d say. He’d say that they had low expectations when they headed to B.C. to meet some steel, but they found fish. Even when the water is high, the fish are there, and they scratched a few out. But on their last day – and epic day – 8 guys caught 40 fish. For Pacific Northwest steelhead, there’s only one way to describe that, and it’s EPIC. Brian said he caught one of the most gorgeous, perfect specimens of hen steelhead that he or his guide had ever seen. Not a scale out of place. Wish he was here to tell you for himself.
On The Chum: A Backyard to Nowhere is the top post – this film is going to make a ton of buzz. It’s also profiled in this month’s This Is Fly, and you must – must – must read about it. Check out the trailers on the Chum and you’ll know immediately why we’re scrambling to get these guys on the Schtick.
On October 12 – a very interesting post in which skeptic Dr. Gerald Smith, a fish biologist from the University of Michigan, challenges whether Asian Carp really pose a risk to the Great Lakes.
And on October 11 – Frankenfish are getting closer to store shelves: thanks, FDA.
Plus, Ashton Kutcher may have legitimately caught the fly fishing bug, there’s a Hatch sticker on his Mac – Fitz Cahall’s Season 2 – and the current Slab of the Month voting is on. A crazy Montana brown trout is leading with almost 60% of the vote,</itunes:summary>

Fishhound Fishing Report
The Montana Angler in Bozeman reports that the Lower Madison is 5 stars right now. Good flows temps, so look for big eats if you are willing to commit to a hopper. Nymphs almost always outfish dries on the lower. Fish the buckets between the weedbeds or the fast runs for the most action.
Brian is still out east, and the stripers are going good. Concord Outfitters in Connecticut says the Farmington is back in tip top shape. The high water has receded and the silt has settled down. Good fishing throughout the TMA to be had right now. If you've been holding off due to high water flows, stock your boxes with tan caddis and pheasant tails and you should be in good shape.

Probably the best fishing in the Ozarks right now is on the White River below Beaver Lake if you listen to Just Fishin’ guides in Bentonville. Wade it from the dam to Parker Bend, but you’ll find the better fishing from just above Cane Break to Parker Bottom. The river bottom has changed with some new holes, so be careful. Try small streamers and soft hackles early, then nymphing later in the day.

Fishhound Fishing Report

At Pine View Reservoir in Utah the Tiger Musky fishing is slow but the smallmouth are red hot. Oquirrh Mountain Outfitters gives it four stars out of five right now.
The Pere Marquette River Lodge reports Salmon, salmon and more salmon in Wisconsin. Tons of fish have been pouring through the lower river system for the past week or so! These first fish are bright and super aggressive. Some days are good, some are great. Low light conditions are the name of the game.
Cape Cod is giving up big fish, especially at night, and 40 pound stripers are not only possible, but quite possible right now with some awesome fishing over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Miss Loretta Fishing scores the fishing a full five stars right now.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Coast to Coast and across North America! Anglers cast off tonight in the Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon presented by Scheels and Griffin Fishing Charters. It’s the fishing version of a marathon to raise awareness for the problems facing our waters, and money to help solve those problems through education.

Up the Eastern Seaboard, if Hurricane Irene wasn’t bad enough, the passing of a tropical depression and subsequent storms are leading to even more devastating flooding. In the wake of that, plummeting dissolved oxygen levels mean massive fish kills.

And more bad news from Utah. The parasite that causes whirling disease has been found in four rainbow trout taken from Utah's world famous Green River below Flaming Gorge dam. Clean, inspect and dry your boats, boots and waders, guys.

In Washington – Keep all the fish you want from Alta Lake, Fish Lake and Schallow Pond in the Okanogan through October 22. Those lakes are getting a rehab. I said no…no…no.

Mustad took out a little insurance policy with their new Hook A Million program. Set a state or world record with a Mustad hook and it could mean a ton of money in your pocket.

On the web – and now your mobile phone – our friends at Fishhound have released the Fishhound app (http://fishhound.com/page/fishhound-mobile-apps) for your iPhone or Droid so you can know where to go and what to throw with a few clicks on your smart phone.

Fishhound Fishing Report

In California, river flows on the Upper Sacramento near Lake Shasta are EXCELLENT! Five Star Fishing especially morning and evenings. Water conditions are unusually cold (and clear) in the lower river thanks to continued snow melt. Look for rising rainbows in the tail outs. #16 Elk Hair Caddis should be a good fly for tail out risers. The hopper-dropper fly rig has been working well in the shallow, slower sections. Thanks to The Fly Shop for that report.

Cross Currents Fly Shop in Idaho reports great fishing on The Blackfoot - right now as the flows are down to super levels for floating and fishing. The tube hatch is in full effect on the lower river as UM is back in session and on the nice weekends students flock to the river. Rain in the forecast is great news for anglers because it’s bad news for splash & giggle floaters. There is a fire in the valley so there is smoke and some delays on some of the roads in the area. Fires were bound to happen with as much fuel that has built up over the last couple of summers of above normal precipitation. Hopefully they will burn “in the right places” and not take out houses.

Ohio DNR says fishing is very strong on Lake Erie out of Cleveland right now. Very good walleye fishing using Dipsy Divers with red, gold, silver, black, copper and purple spoons and stick baits. Excellent Yellow perch fishing off the Chagrin River, Fairport and Ashtabula. Finally try for white bass off the Eastlake CEI break wall and Mentor Headlands break wall.

“The River Why” by David James Duncan is epic, beloved, treasured … and now it has a movie, too – one that’s been a long time coming. It stars Zach Gilford, William Hurt, Amber Heard and Kathleen Quinlan.
We’re in luck, because today the producer of that movie, Kristi Cohen, joins us on the Schtick.

Brian / Moldy Chum News
How was IFTD?
Top stories on the Chum

Teeg / Recycled Fish News
Our 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon winners from 2010 are back from epic trips:
Marty Hughes and his boys fished Table Rock Lake with Brian Snowden with help from the PAA and BoatUS Angler
Watch the highlight video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmSqEjOmwPw
The Three Muskyteers – Brian Wise, Kyle Kosovich and Aaron Scott are back from Spring Bay Resort
This year’s anglers are vying for trips to Griffin Fishing, Spring Bay Resort and Fish Tales Outfitter thanks to Scheels.
More info on our website: http://www.recycledfish.org/blog/fish-a-thon/epic-trips-await-24-hour-fish-a-thon-anglers/ (http://www.recycledfish.org/blog/fish-a-thon/epic-trips-await-24-hour-fish-a-thon-anglers/)
Team Bear Trail – K8 and Nanci – are our current fundraising leaders: http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/team-bear-trail.htm (http://www.recycledfish.org/our-programs/fish-a-thon-2011/team-bear-trail.htm)
Team Friendzy – Mike Sklad and crew – put in their 24 this past weekend
I’m off to Kentucky this week!

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news in Alaska – Trout Unlimited just finished a major salmon restoration project in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. Great! Salmon can use all the good news they can get.

Tragic news from Washington – A fisheries worker died last week during a steelhead survey on the Wind River. Mark Snepp, died while walking the bank and recording fish data from his diving partner.

Weather Alert: Hurricane Irene is storming toward the coast of Florida, and could have major impacts all the way up the eastern seaboard. Batten down the hatches and secure your boats.

More from Washington state, the pink salmon run is awesome, but sockeye returns are dismal. No Lake Wenatchee Sockeye Fishery This Year. Go stick some pinks.

In Kansas – 7 lakes are under a Blue-Green Algae warning, more are under advisory status. Blue-Green algae can be fatal, especially to pets, but tend to produce flu-like symptoms. Blue-Green Algae blooms are happening nationwide, it’s not just Kansas.

The Fly Fishing industry moves its IFTD show from New Orleans to Reno next year. Back to the mountains for the fly guys.

In Pro Bass Fishing, South Carolina pro Todd Auten is the 2011PAA Angler of the Year. We’ll see him at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic with the other 15 top PAA Finishers.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds

Good news for Permit in Mexico. With the help of Costa Del Mar sunglasses, Bonefish and Tarpon Trust has been able to expand Project Permit to Mexican waters.

Bad news for fish around the docks at Maynard’s resort in Minnetonka, Minnesota. They’re all going to have sore lips, because today Marathon Man Jeff Kolodzinski is aiming to break his own world record of 2,143 fish caught in a 24 hour period. It’s all for a good cause: Fishing4Life, look ‘em up.

New York has a new state record brook trout. Dan Germain from Forestport, caught a 5 pound, 8 oz brookie on June 15 in South Lake in Herkimer County, and it’s now been verified and certified.

Here’s a crazy new record from Nebraska. Tyler Ciurej of Bellevue, Nebraska set a hook-and-line record with a 4-pound, 3-ounce goldfish in June. He took it on a hot dog in Halleck Park Lake.

In Colorado, enter any of the 42 state parks free of charge on August 1.

Industry news, Danny Blandford moves from the Professional Anglers Association to the Association of Collegiate Anglers. Congrats on the new gig, Danny.

In Pro Bass Fishing, Dave Mercer is under contract for two more years as host of the B.A.S.S. events, and eight remaining anglers fish this weekend in a sudden death tournament for $100,000 in the Toyota Trucks All-Star Week on the Alabama River.

This week’s Stewardship Tip: Conserve water. Put a brick in your toilet tank, make sure your sprinklers aren’t hitting your sidewalk, and install a low flow shower head. Water – fish need it, and we’re running out.

Around the world of fishing in 120 Seconds
It’s good news if you’re one of the companies who took honors at last week’s ICAST awards, here’s a quick list of some of the winners in this special ICAST edition of 120 Seconds.
Best of Show award went to Berkley Nanofil line, which also won in the fishing line category. Not a braid or a superline, this is a low stretch, low diameter monofilament. Neat stuff. Berkley’s parent company, Pure Fishing, also took more awards than any other company this year – by a landslide.
Frabill took best of show for their Frabill Suit – we also liked advancements in their Conservation Series nets line of products.
Best Boat award went to Hobie for the Hobie Mirage Revolution 11 – Hobie always does an awesome job.
Daiwa had the best combo, and G Loomis won in both best rod categories – best fly rod and best conventional fishing rod.
The Costa Women’s Collection turned heads in the eyewear category.
VestPac won Best Fly Fishing accessory with their DriftPac, and TFO won best Fly Reel for their BVK Fly Reel, even though this isn’t really a fly show.
Speaking of reels, Abu Garcia’s Revo MGX was the show-stopper in conventional reels, those Revos are just amazing.
Pure Fishing also won in kid’s fishing with Shakespeare’s Casting Game & Sound Fishing Kit.
We loved seeing Patrick Sebile roll out a single-hook design crankbait, and it got the Best Hard Lure honors this year – another win for Pure Fishing.
Koppers LIVE TARGET Hollow Body Mouse won for soft baits with an addition to their super-realistic line of baits.</itunes:summary>
